What is the difference between CP1L-EL20DR-D and CP1L-L20DR-D?
The EL version has a built-in 100 Mbps Ethernet port for HMI, SCADA, and PLC-to-PLC networking — the L version has only a peripheral USB programming port. Use the EL when you want the HMI to talk to the PLC over the LAN; use the L and save the cost when nothing on the machine needs Ethernet.
Can the CP1L-EL20DR-D drive a VFD or servo drive?
Yes, in two ways. For Modbus RTU over serial, fit a CP1W-CIF11 or CP1W-CIF12 option board and run Modbus to a 3G3MX2 / 3G3JE inverter. For step/direction drives, use the built-in 100 kHz pulse output on transistor siblings (CP1L-EL20DT-D / -EM). The DR (relay) version is the better fit for VFDs that only need start/stop and frequency-command contacts.
What software programs the CP1L-EL20DR-D?
CX-Programmer, included in the CX-One suite. Programming can be done over the USB peripheral port, over Ethernet from a laptop on the same LAN, or via an NS / NB HMI with the Sysmac Studio / CX-Designer tools. Retain a copy of CX-Programmer 9.x if your project is stable — latest CX-One may not include legacy CP1 support.
Can I expand the CP1L-EL20DR-D beyond 20 I/O?
Yes — one CP1W expansion module can be fitted to the right of the CPU (CP1W-8ED, 20EDR, 20EDT, 40EDR, AD041, DA021, TS, etc.). Total addresses cap out at 60 extra I/O points. For more I/O, step up to a CP1L-EM40DR-D head, which accepts three CP1W modules.
