Product Overview

The Omron CP1W-20EDR1 is a 20-point digital expansion unit for the CP1E, CP1L, and CP1H PLC families. It adds 12 DC inputs and 8 relay outputs to a CP-series CPU that has run out of built-in I/O. The unit sits on the right-hand side of the CPU and clips on with no extra cable. A removable screw terminal block makes wiring and replacement quick, and the relay outputs handle 2 A at 250 VAC, so most solenoid valves, motor contactors, and indicator lights connect directly.

When to add this module

Add the CP1W-20EDR1 when a CP1E, CP1L, or CP1H CPU has used all of its built-in points. It is the standard pick for machines that have grown by a few inputs and outputs during commissioning, or for OEM variants that share one CPU but need different I/O counts. The 'R1' suffix marks the relay-output version; the 'T' suffixes (CP1W-20EDT, CP1W-20EDT1) are the transistor-output versions for high-cycle switching.

Choosing the right sibling

If you need only inputs, CP1W-8ED (8 inputs) or CP1W-16ED (16 inputs) save panel space. If you need only outputs, CP1W-8ER (8 relay) or CP1W-16ER (16 relay) cover that. For a mix like 12 in / 8 out but with transistor outputs, use the CP1W-20EDT (NPN sink) or CP1W-20EDT1 (PNP source). Up to three CP1W expansion units can sit on a single CP-series CPU, with a few model-specific limits.

Before ordering

Confirm the CPU is in the CP1E, CP1L, or CP1H family. CJ and NJ CPUs use a different expansion format. Check the planned 24 VDC input current draw against the CPU's 5 VDC budget for expansion. The relay outputs are rated 2 A per point, 8 A per common; do not parallel outputs to drive larger loads. Plan wiring space above and below the removable terminal block.

Key Features

  • 20 digital I/O points: 12 DC inputs + 8 relay outputs
  • Compatible with CP1E, CP1L, and CP1H CPUs
  • Screw-terminal removable block for fast wiring
  • Relay outputs rated 2 A at 250 VAC
  • Clips on to the right side of the CPU; no extra cable
  • Up to 3 expansion units per CPU
  • DIN-rail or screw mounting
  • SKU: CP1W-20EDR1
  • Series: CP1W
  • I/O: 24 I/O

Best-Fit Applications

  • I/O expansion on CP1L and CP1H machines that have outgrown built-in points
  • OEM variants that share one CP1E CPU but need different I/O counts
  • Adding relay outputs for solenoid valves and contactor coils
  • Adding inputs for sensors, pushbuttons, and end-of-travel switches
  • Retrofit work on installed CP-series panels that need more I/O

Buying Checklist

  • Choose CP1W-20EDR1 for 12 DC inputs and 8 relay outputs on one expansion unit.
  • Choose CP1W-20EDT (NPN) or CP1W-20EDT1 (PNP) for transistor outputs instead.
  • Choose CP1W-8ED or CP1W-16ED when you only need extra inputs.
  • Choose CP1W-8ER or CP1W-16ER when you only need extra outputs.
  • Confirm the CPU is a CP1E, CP1L, or CP1H before ordering.
  • Check relay output load under 2 A per point and 8 A per common.

FAQ for CP1W-20EDR1

What is the difference between CP1W-20EDR1 and CP1W-20EDT?
Both are 20-point CP1W expansion units with 12 DC inputs, but the R1 has 8 relay outputs and the T has 8 NPN transistor outputs. Pick the R1 for solenoid valves, contactor coils, and mixed AC / DC loads. Pick the T for high-cycle DC switching. For PNP outputs, look at the CP1W-20EDT1.
Can CP1W-20EDR1 be used with CP1E CPUs?
Yes. The CP1W-20EDR1 works with CP1E, CP1L, and CP1H CPUs. Up to three CP1W expansion units can sit on a single CPU; the exact count depends on the CPU model. Check the CP1E user manual for the limit that applies to the specific CPU in use.
Is the terminal block removable?
Yes. The screw-terminal block is removable, so wiring can be done on a bench and the block then snapped back on. Spare CP1W-terminal blocks (Phoenix-style) are sold separately. Always power the unit down before removing the block to avoid shorting the output commons.
