Omron CP-Series Compact PLCs — CP1E, CP1L, CP1H & CP2E
The Omron CP-series is the compact PLC line for small machines where a CJ-series rack is too large. Four heads cover the range: CP1E for cost, CP1L for the middle, CP1H for high-speed counting, plus the CP1W option boards that add serial, analog or Ethernet. Omron's current CP-series brochure now leads with CP2E as the entry-level model. We hold 63 CP-series SKUs in Xiamen.
Lifecycle status
CP1H is current production; CP1L-L and CP1L-M are superseded by CP2E and CP1L-EL/EM
Omron publishes no end-of-production date for CP1H, and it is still carried with full ordering tables on live Omron product pages and featured as the top tier of the current CP Series Brochure. The CP1L-L and CP1L-M types were stopped on 30 May 2023 with CP2E and CP1L-EL/EM named as replacements. Omron Europe separately shows a last-time-buy date of 30 June 2027 for CP1L-M40DT-D.
What to fit instead: CP2E and CP1L-EL/EM replace CP1L-L and CP1L-M; CP1H remains current
Key specifications
- CP1E: 10 to 60 I/O on 100-240 VAC (-A) or 24 VDC (-D), relay or transistor outputs. No built-in Ethernet — Ethernet requires the CP1W-CIF41 option board, available on the N30, N40, N60 and NA20 models only
- CP1L: 10 to 60 I/O, 4-axis high-speed counter at 100 kHz single-phase, 2-axis pulse output at 100 kHz. The CP1L-EM and CP1L-EL types have no USB peripheral port and are programmed over Ethernet; the M and L10/L14/L20 types have USB
- CP1H: 40 I/O (24 inputs, 16 outputs). The X and XA types give 4-axis high-speed counting at 100 kHz single-phase / 50 kHz phase-differential with no line-driver inputs
- CP1H-Y20DT-D: 20 I/O, 2 axes, 1 MHz single-phase / 500 kHz differential line-driver high-speed counter — the only CP1H with line-driver inputs
- CP1H EtherNet/IP is via the CP1W-EIP61 option board; the CP1H-EX has built-in Ethernet. CX-Programmer Ver. 6.1 or later supports ladder and ST in function blocks
- CP1W option boards: CIF01 (RS-232C, 15 m), CIF11 (RS-422A/485, 50 m), CIF12-V1 (isolated RS-422A/485, 500 m), CIF41 (Ethernet)
How to read a CP-series model number
Three suffix letters decide supply, output type and network. Getting them wrong is the most common cause of a mis-order.
| Suffix | Meaning | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| -A | 100-240 VAC supply | The input circuits may still be 24 VDC — -A describes the supply, not the inputs |
| -D | 24 VDC supply | Standard for transistor-output and low-voltage panels |
| -DR | Relay outputs | Slower than transistor; not for high-speed pulse output |
| -DT | Transistor outputs | Required for pulse output and fast counting |
| -E / -EA | Expansion models | Check which expansion units fit the host CPU |
| N-type | More I/O points, up to 60 | N30, N40 and N60 accept the CIF41 Ethernet board |

Option boards that only fit certain CPUs
The CP1W-ADB21, CP1W-DAB21V and CP1W-MAB221 analog option boards fit the CP1L-EL and CP1L-EM models only. They will not fit a CP1H or a CP1E. The CP1W-MAB221 is a mixed analog I/O board (2 analog inputs and 2 analog outputs, 1/4000 resolution), not an analog-input-only board as often listed. The CP1W-MAD44 is an expansion unit rather than an option board, and it is not compatible with CP2E.
Where these parts get used
- Small packaging machine with a CP1L-EM30DT-D driving 24 V I/O, a CP1W-CIF11 for Modbus-RTU to a VFD, and a 7-inch NB7W HMI on Ethernet. The EM30DT-D measures 130 mm wide by 90 mm high by 85 mm deep
- Conveyor controller with a CP1E-N40DR-A running on 100-240 VAC with 24 inputs and 16 relay outputs, no Ethernet, programmed in ladder from CX-Programmer over USB
- Test bench with a CP1H-X40DR-A reading four quadrature encoders at 100 kHz single-phase and sending results over EtherNet/IP to a SCADA server
Which model do you need
- Choose CP1E when you need a low-cost 10 to 60 I/O PLC for a simple machine and Ethernet is not required.
- Choose CP1L-EM30DT-D when you need Ethernet plus 30 I/O in a 130 mm wide DIN-rail footprint — and note this type has no USB port, so it is programmed over Ethernet.
- Choose CP1H-X40DR-A for four high-speed counter axes at 100 kHz. If you need 1 MHz line-driver inputs, the only model is the CP1H-Y20DT-D, which has 20 I/O, not 40.
- Choose CP2E for new compact builds — Omron's current CP-series brochure positions it as the entry-level model in place of CP1E.

Frequently asked
What is the highest high-speed counter rate on the CP1H-X40DR-A?
100 kHz single-phase or 50 kHz phase-differential across four axes. The CP1H-X and CP1H-XA types have no line-driver inputs at all. Line-driver counting at 1 MHz single-phase and 500 kHz differential exists only on the CP1H-Y20DT-D, a 20 I/O, 2-axis model.
Does the CP1L-EM30DT-D have a USB port?
No. The CP1L-EM and CP1L-EL types have no USB peripheral port and are programmed over Ethernet. The CP1L-M and CP1L-L10, L14 and L20 types do have USB. The EM30DT-D measures 130 mm wide by 90 mm high by 85 mm deep.
Does the CP1E have Ethernet?
Not built in. Ethernet on a CP1E requires the CP1W-CIF41 option board, which is available on the CP1E-N30DR, N40DR, N60DR and NA20DR variants only.
Which CPU does the CP1E-N40DR-A fit?
It runs on 100-240 VAC — the -A suffix denotes an AC supply. The I/O split is 24 inputs and 16 relay outputs. The -D suffix would indicate a 24 VDC supply.
Can I fit a CP1W-DAB21V analog board in a CP1H?
No. The CP1W-ADB21, CP1W-DAB21V and CP1W-MAB221 analog option boards fit the CP1L-EL and CP1L-EM models only. Ordering one for a CP1H or CP1E will result in a non-fitting board and a return.
Is the CP1H still current production?
Yes. Omron publishes no end-of-production date for CP1H and still lists it with full ordering tables on live product pages, as the top tier of the current CP Series Brochure. The CP1L-L and CP1L-M types were stopped on 30 May 2023 with CP2E and CP1L-EL/EM as replacements.
Which Omron board gives a CP1 a serial port?
The CP1W-CIF01 gives one RS-232C port up to 15 m. The CP1W-CIF11 gives one non-isolated RS-422A/485 port up to 50 m on a terminal block, and the CP1W-CIF12-V1 gives an isolated RS-422A/485 port up to 500 m. All three support Host Link, NT Link, no-protocol, Serial PLC Link and Modbus-RTU Easy Master.
