Product Overview

The D4C-1201 is the pin-plunger variant of Omron's D4C compact limit-switch family, designed for applications where a standard 30 mm wide limit switch would interfere with the mechanism or the panel layout. The 16 mm flat body is Omron's thinnest mechanical limit switch, suited to compact machinery like desktop packaging equipment, small assembly cells, door interlocks on control cabinets, and position-confirmation on miniature pneumatic slides. It carries an SPDT (1 NO + 1 NC) contact rated 5 A at 250 VAC or 4 A at 30 VDC, with a mechanical life of 10 million operations and an electrical life of 200,000 operations at the rated load.

How D4C-1201 differs from siblings

The D4C family splits along four axes: actuator type (pin plunger, roller plunger, roller lever, sealed pin plunger, cross-roller), cable type (VCTF oil-resistant, VCTF standard, SJT(O) for North America), cable length (3 m or 5 m), and current rating (standard 5 A or microload 0.1 A). Within the standard-load 3 m VCTF oil-resistant tier: D4C-1201 = pin plunger (this SKU), D4C-1202 = roller plunger, D4C-1224 = high-sensitivity roller lever, D4C-1250 = cross-roller plunger. For 5 m cable, the suffix changes to 3 instead of 2: D4C-1301 = pin plunger 5 m, D4C-1302 = roller plunger 5 m.

Mechanical and electrical installation

Mount the D4C-1201 with M4 screws through the two mounting holes on the housing. Operating force is 5.88 N max, pretravel is 1.5 mm max, and overtravel is at least 4 mm, so the actuator can absorb substantial overtravel from an overshooting cam without damage. Differential travel is 0.5 mm max, giving clean switching at the moment of contact. The 3 m cable ends in 4 conductors for the SPDT contact: brown = COM, blue = NO, black = NC (or per Omron colour code: red = NO, white = COM, black = NC for some versions; check the label on the actual switch).

Wiring and use cases

Wire the D4C-1201 to a 24 VDC logic input by routing the COM to the 24 VDC supply and the NO contact to the digital input. The NC contact is typically not used in 24 VDC logic circuits; leave it unconnected or wire it to an indicator lamp if you want a closed-when-actuated visual. For 230 VAC load switching (a relay coil, contactor, or solenoid), wire COM to the AC line, NO to the load, and ensure the cable is rated for the AC voltage (it is — VCTF 300 V rating).

Buying Checklist

  • Pick D4C-1201 for pin plunger actuator with 3 m oil-resistant VCTF cable
  • Pick D4C-1202 if the actuator approaches from the side and you want a roller plunger
  • Pick D4C-1301 if you need 5 m cable instead of 3 m
  • Pick D4C-4201 if your circuit is microload for direct connection to a PLC input
  • Use the D4N or D4B series for safety-rated position monitoring
  • Mount with M4 screws through the two housing holes; tighten to ~1.5 N·m

FAQ for D4C-1201

What is the difference between D4C-1201 and D4C-1202?
Same body, same cable, same electrical ratings — only the actuator differs. D4C-1201 has a straight pin plunger that accepts axial contact from a cam. D4C-1202 has a roller plunger that rolls when a cam approaches from the side, reducing wear if the cam is moving fast or if the contact angle is unpredictable. Pick D4C-1202 when the actuator sees continuous cam motion; pick D4C-1201 for direct axial push from a stopper.
What is the difference between D4C-1201 and D4C-1301?
Same actuator, same electrical ratings — only the cable length differs. D4C-1201 ships with a 3 m VCTF cable; D4C-1301 ships with a 5 m cable. Pick the shorter one if the panel layout allows; pick the 5 m variant if the cable needs to reach a remote junction box without splicing.
Is the D4C-1201 safety-rated?
No — the D4C is a general-purpose position switch with a single SPDT contact. It does not have force-guided contacts and is not approved for safety functions per ISO 13849-1. For safety-rated position monitoring (guard-door interlock, E-stop position feedback), use the D4N (snap-action with positive opening) or D4B (force-guided with direct opening) safety limit switch instead.
Can the D4C-1201 be used outdoors?
Yes in most outdoor applications, as long as the cable entry is sealed against water ingress. The IP67 rating handles rain, splash, and temporary immersion. Operating temperature -10 to +70 °C covers most climates; in sub-freezing conditions, ensure the actuator does not freeze (ice would prevent the plunger from returning). For heavy rain or continuous water exposure, add a small protective hood over the switch.
