Product Overview
The Omron E2E-X3D1-U is an M12 threaded inductive proximity sensor built for panels and machines that only have an AC or free-voltage supply. The 'U' suffix marks the 2-wire AC/DC free-voltage class, so the sensor runs directly from 24-240 VAC or 24-240 VDC without a separate DC sensor supply. It detects a 3 mm standard iron target through the front face, with a shielded body that allows flush mounting in metal. The pre-wired 2 m PVC cable is non-polarity, so it can be wired either way to the load. An operation indicator LED on the back face confirms target detection during commissioning.
When AC/DC free-voltage matters
A standard 3-wire DC sensor needs a regulated 24 VDC supply, which is fine in a control cabinet but a hassle on a 100 VAC machine, an old relay panel, or a remote site with a 240 VAC supply. The E2E-X3D1-U drops directly into those situations: it wires in series with the load, just like a limit switch, and runs on whatever voltage is present between 24 and 240 V AC or DC. It is also a strong retrofit pick for replacing mechanical limit switches where a non-contact sensor is preferred.
Choosing between the E2E family
E2E-X3D1-U is the 2-wire AC/DC free-voltage version in the M12 housing. The 2-wire DC-only sibling in the same M12 barrel is the E2E-X8MD1, which gives 8 mm range on 10-30 VDC for cabinets with a sensor supply. The smaller M8 size is the E2E-X2D1-M1, and the larger M18 size is the E2E-X8B1D18-M1. Pick the E2E-X3D1-U when the panel has only 100/200 VAC or a free-voltage supply; pick the E2E-X8MD1 when a longer range on a regulated 24 VDC rail is the goal.
Before ordering
Confirm the supply is within 24-240 V AC or DC, and that the load current stays between 5 mA and 200 mA. Allow 30% extra sensing distance over the actual target distance because non-magnetic metals reduce the rated range. The 1 kHz response handles most part-counting and position checks; for higher-speed lines, move to a through-beam photoelectric sensor.

Buying Checklist
- Choose E2E-X3D1-U when the cabinet only has 24-240 VAC or DC, no DC sensor rail.
- Choose E2E-X3D1-N for a 2-wire DC-only 10-30 VDC sensor at the same range.
- Choose E2E-X3D1-M1 when the panel uses M12 connector cordsets.
- Choose E2E-X5D1-U or E2E-X8MD1-U for a longer 5 mm or 8 mm range.
- Confirm the load current sits between 5 mA and 200 mA.
- Check the supply is within 24-240 V AC or DC, with no polarity on the wires.
