Product Overview

The Omron E2K-C25ME1 2M is a cylindrical capacitive proximity sensor designed for targets an inductive sensor cannot see - plastic pellets, glass, cardboard, wood, and liquids through non-metallic container walls. The unshielded M30 barrel delivers a 25 mm maximum sensing range, adjustable down to 3 mm via the 18-turn sensitivity potentiometer on the rear of the head. The 3-wire DC NPN normally-open output switches up to 200 mA into a PLC digital input, and the red operation LED on the cap shows the target state from across the cabinet. Pick the E2K-C25ME1 for level checks in plastic hoppers or detecting liquid through glass.

Why capacitive instead of inductive

Inductive sensors only see metal. Capacitive sensors see almost anything with a different dielectric constant from air - water, oil, plastic resin, grain, paper, glass, cardboard, ceramic. The trade-off is that capacitive sensors also see the machine structure behind the target, so the mounting position and the gap to grounded metal matters far more than with an inductive head. Use the sensitivity pot to trim the range just past the target reach for the most stable detection.

Choosing the right E2K-C25 variant

The E2K-C25 family splits on output wiring. E2K-C25ME1 is the NPN NO 3-wire DC version (this SKU). E2K-C25ME2 is the NPN NC 3-wire DC sibling for fail-safe applications. E2K-C25MF1 / E2K-C25MF2 are the PNP NO / NC versions. E2K-C25MY1 / E2K-C25MY2 are the AC 100-220 V 2-wire versions for cabinets without a 24 VDC sensor rail. E2K-C25MX1 is the AC/DC 2-wire free-voltage NO. Step down to E2K-C15MX if the M18 body is what you need, or up to the E2K-F flat-body line when the M30 barrel will not fit.

Before ordering

Confirm the target's dielectric is high enough - water is reliable, dry plastic pellets can be marginal, dry paper may need the sensitivity turned up to detect at all. Wire the sensor to a clean 24 VDC supply (10-40 V operating) and share the 0 V line with the PLC input common. Mount away from grounded metal behind the target face, and confirm the IP64 rating is sufficient for the wash-down zone - the E2K-C25 family is IP64 only, not IP67.

What is the difference between E2K-C25ME1 and E2K-C25ME2?
E2K-C25ME1 is NPN normally-open - the output transistor closes when a target enters the sensing range. E2K-C25ME2 is NPN normally-closed - the output is closed when no target is present and opens on target. Use ME1 when the PLC expects a 'target present' input; use ME2 when the wiring is fail-safe and a missing target should trigger the alarm.
Can this sensor detect water or oil through a glass container?
Yes. Capacitive sensors detect the dielectric difference between air and the target, so a water or oil level inside a glass or plastic sight glass is a normal use. The sensitivity pot should be set just past the maximum target distance, and the glass wall should be no thicker than 5 mm for stable detection.
Is the E2K-C25ME1 2M IP67 rated?
No. The E2K-C25 family is IP64 rated - protected against splashing water but not rated for full immersion or high-pressure wash-down. For an IP67 capacitive sensor on a wash-down line, the E2K-F flat-body family (IP67) or a remote-head capacitive sensor like the E2KQ-X is the right pick.
