The Omron E3FA-BP12 2M is a compact M18 cylindrical background-suppression (BGS) photoelectric sensor with a 100 mm sensing distance, PNP output, and a 2 m pre-wired cable. The "2M" in the part number means a 2-metre oil-resistant PVC cable — no connector at the cable end. The ABS plastic body is rated IP67/IP69K for washdown environments.

What background suppression actually does

A standard diffuse-reflective sensor (E3FA-DP12) sees anything that reflects enough light back, at any distance — including a conveyor frame or background wall sitting behind the target, which can latch the output ON. A BGS sensor only "sees" objects inside its set window (5 to 100 mm on this model). Anything beyond the cutoff is ignored. That makes BGS the right pick when the target is small or low-reflectivity and a fixed background sits behind it.

E3FA family: ABS plastic or nickel-plated brass

The E3FA line is the ABS plastic housing for general-purpose washdown. For a metal (nickel-plated brass) body in harsher mechanical or chemical environments, pick the E3FB series with the same sensing options. The BP12 uses a visible red LED, which makes alignment fast because you can see the spot on the target.

Before ordering

The cable is 2 m of oil-resistant PVC, hard-wired to the sensor. For a detachable M8 or M12 pigtail or a longer cable, look at the E3FA-[]M1J (M12 4-pin) or E3FA-[]M3J (M8 4-pin) connector variants. Plan a 10-30 VDC supply capable of 30 mA plus the 100 mA output load.

What is the difference between E3FA-BP12 2M and E3FA-DP12 2M?
BP12 is background-suppression — it ignores anything beyond 100 mm, so a fixed background wall cannot latch the output. DP12 is plain diffuse-reflective — it sees anything that reflects light at any distance, including a background, and can false-trigger on a fixed wall. Pick BGS when the target is small or low-reflectivity and a background sits behind it.
What does the "2M" in the part number mean?
2M means a 2-metre pre-wired oil-resistant PVC cable. The sensor has no connector at the cable end — the wires are stripped and tinned, ready to land on a terminal block. For a detachable M8 or M12 connector, look at the E3FA-[]M1J or E3FA-[]M3J variants instead.
Can the E3FA-BP12 2M detect black or transparent objects?
BGS sensors depend on the target reflecting light back to the receiver. Dark or transparent targets reflect less light, and detection may be unreliable at the full 100 mm range. Shorten the working distance to 20-50 mm for dark surfaces, or switch to a retro-reflective sensor (E3FA-RP11 2M) with an MSR filter for transparent film.
Is the E3FA-BP12 2M the same sensor with or without a connector?
The 2M suffix is the pre-wired 2 m cable version. The same sensor in a connectorised body is the E3FA-BP12-M1J (M12 4-pin pigtail) or E3FA-BP12-M3J (M8 4-pin pigtail). All three have the same 100 mm BGS sensing and PNP output — only the cable end differs.
