Product Overview

The Omron E3FA-DN12 is an M18 cylindrical diffuse-reflective photoelectric sensor with a built-in amplifier. Pick it when the cabinet needs a small, general-purpose object-detect sensor wired to an NPN PLC input (or any 12-24 VDC sink input) on a quick-disconnect M12 cable.

The sensor reads 100 mm sensing range on white paper 100x100 mm (up to 300 mm on 300x300 mm white paper, the Omron catalog standard). The light source is a visible-red 624 nm LED (NOT a laser; the laser BGS sensor in the same E3FA housing is the E3Z-LL family). Light-ON / Dark-ON mode is selectable via a slide switch on the back of the sensor.

Output is NPN open-collector, 100 mA max at 26.4 VDC. Supply is 12-24 VDC plus or minus 10 percent at 25 mA max. Response time is 1 ms or less. The M18 threaded plastic body is IP67 (NOT IP69K -- the IP69K rating is the E3FB stainless line). Operating temperature -25 to +55 degrees Celsius.

The -12 suffix is the M12 4-pin connector variant on the Omron catalog; the bare E3FA-DN12 ships with a M12 connector on the rear face only (the field cable is supplied separately). The pre-wired 2 m cable variant is the E3FA-DN11; the PNP polarity twin in the same M12 connector body is the E3FA-DP12.

FAQ for E3FA-DN12

What is the difference between E3FA-DN11 and E3FA-DN12?
Wiring. The E3FA-DN11 ships with a pre-attached 2 m oil-resistant PVC cable pigtail -- no M12 connector needed. The E3FA-DN12 (this SKU) ships with an M12 4-pin connector on the rear face; the field cable is attached with a separate XS2F / XS2W M12 4-pin cordset. Both sensors are otherwise identical: NPN diffuse, 100 mm range, M18 plastic body, IP67.
Is the E3FA-DN12 rated IP69K?
No. The E3FA-DN12 is IP67 rated only. IP69K (high-temperature, high-pressure washdown) belongs to the E3FB stainless steel sensor line. For a washdown-grade diffuse-reflective sensor in the food / beverage industry, use the E3FB-DN22 (NPN / M12 connector, SUS316L stainless body, IP69K).
Does the E3FA-DN12 use a laser or an LED?
Visible red LED at 624 nm -- NOT a laser. The visible red dot is just an aiming aid. The laser BGS (background-suppression) sensor in the same E3FA housing is the E3Z-LL family (E3Z-LL61 NPN / E3Z-LL86 PNP). For laser diffuse-reflective sensing at long ranges (up to 1 m), move to the E3Z-L series.
Can the E3FA-DN12 detect black or shiny objects?
Diffuse-reflective sensors can detect most opaque objects at the rated distance, including black and shiny surfaces. The detection distance shortens on black and shiny surfaces because less light reflects back to the receiver. For background-suppression (BGS) detection with consistent distance on color- or surface-variable parts, use the E3Z-LS61 / LS66 BGS sensor instead.
