Product Overview

The Omron E3S-AR36 is a compact photoelectric sensor with a polarised retroreflective head and built-in amplifier. The vertical body houses a red 624 nm LED plus a polarising filter that rejects the specular return from shiny surfaces, allowing detection of shrink-wrap packaging, polished metal blanks, and glossy labels when the matched E39-R1 reflector is mounted opposite. With the reflector the unit reaches 2 m on a 100 mm minimum target. The M12 4-pin connector, PNP open-collector output, and 10-30 VDC supply make it a drop-in fit for most PLC control cabinets. Pick the E3S-AR36 when the target is glossy enough to confuse a standard retro-reflective sensor.

Where it fits in the E3S-A family

The E3S-A line is split by detection method. E3S-AR36 is the polarised retro-reflective vertical-body sensor with MSR. E3S-AR31 is the horizontal-body sibling of the same polarised retro. E3S-AD36 / AD37 are the diffuse-reflective 20 cm / 70 cm units. E3S-AT36 is the through-beam pair at 7 m. The plain E3S-R36 (without MSR) reads matte surfaces at the same 2 m range; the AR36 adds the polarising filter for shiny-target applications. Choosing between the connector versions

The Omron E3S-A series ships in two wiring styles. The -AR36 suffix is the M12 4-pin connector version; the -AR36 2M suffix swaps the connector for a pre-wired 2 m oil-resistant PVC cable. Connector variants fit machine builders that already have M12 cordset stock; pre-wired versions save a connector pair on every install. Both share the same NEMA 4X / 6 + IP67 housing and E39-L70 vertical mounting bracket (supplied).

Confirm the target has enough retroreflective return for a polarised sensor at 2 m - opaque matte targets are best. Pick the E39-R1 reflector that ships with the unit, or step up to E39-R2 for a tighter beam. The supply is 10-30 VDC at 30 mA max; route a common ground with the PLC input common. Wire the M12 connector per Omron pin map (brown = +V, blue = 0 V, black = output). Set the rear Light-ON / Dark-ON switch before commissioning.

The E3S-AR36 is the polarised retro-reflective version with mirror-surface rejection (MSR) for shiny targets. The plain E3S-R36 is a standard retro-reflective without the polarising filter. Pick AR36 for shrink-wrap, polished metal, or PET bottles; pick R36 for matte surfaces at the same 2 m range.
Does the E3S-AR36 work at 24 VDC?
Yes. The supply range is 10-30 VDC, which covers the standard 24 VDC sensor rail found in most PLC control cabinets. The unit draws about 30 mA at 24 VDC and switches up to 100 mA into the connected load through its PNP output stage.
Which reflector does the E3S-AR36 ship with?
