Product Overview

The Omron E3Z-R86 is a compact retro-reflective photoelectric sensor with mirror-surface rejection (MSR). It pairs a red LED with a polarising filter, so the receiver only accepts light that returns with the same twist it sent out. That stops shiny metal, glossy plastic, and shrink-wrap from triggering the sensor. With the E39-R1S reflector, the rated range is 4 m. The reflector is sold separately. A 4-pin M8 connector on the back accepts any standard XS3F cordset, and the PNP open-collector output drops high when the beam is broken.

When MSR matters

Plain retro-reflective sensors mistake a polished stainless surface or a printed shrink-wrap for the reflector, so the output stays on. MSR solves that, which makes the E3Z-R86 a strong pick on bottling lines, mirror-finished panels, and bright metal feeders. For clear PET bottles, the E3Z-B family is the better pick because polarised light does not work well on transparent plastic. For a longer 30 m range where space allows a separate emitter and receiver, use the E3Z-T through-beam family.

Choosing the right version

E3Z-R86 is the PNP, M8-connector version at 4 m. Pick E3Z-R81 2M for the same 4 m range on a 2 m pre-wired PNP cable, or E3Z-R61 2M for NPN pre-wired. The M8 NPN version is E3Z-R66. If the application only needs 3 m, the E3Z-R8 sensor on the E39-R1 reflector reaches that range at a lower cost.

Before ordering

Add an E39-R1S reflector (40 × 60 mm) and an XS3F-M421-402-A M8 cordset to the basket; neither ships with the sensor. Mount the sensor and reflector at least 100 mm apart to stay above the minimum sensing distance. Use the L/D selector on the rear to pick Light-ON or Dark-ON, and the one-turn sensitivity adjuster to trim the gain against a real target.

Best-Fit Applications

  • Detection of shiny metal panels on transfer lines
  • Bottle and can detection on shrink-wrap infeed conveyors
  • Trigger generation at a labeler or printer station
  • Workpiece detection on assembly cells with glossy parts
  • Stack-height and roll-diameter checks on packaging machinery lines

Buying Checklist

  • Choose E3Z-R86 for a PNP M8-connector MSR sensor at a 4 m range.
  • Choose E3Z-R81 2M (PNP) or E3Z-R61 2M (NPN) for a 2 m pre-wired lead instead.
  • Choose E3Z-R66 (NPN) or E3Z-R8 (3 m) for different output or range options.
  • Choose E3Z-B86 for clear PET bottles; polarised light does not work on transparent plastic.
  • Confirm an E39-R1S reflector and an XS3F-M42@-402-A M8 cordset are on the order.
  • Confirm at least 100 mm between the sensor face and the reflector.

FAQ for E3Z-R86

What is the difference between E3Z-R86 and E3Z-B86?
Both are cuboid E3Z retro-reflective sensors on an M8 4-pin connector, but they handle different targets. E3Z-R86 has MSR polarised red light at 4 m, which is ideal for shiny, mirror-like surfaces. E3Z-B86 is the clear-bottle sensor without MSR at 500 mm, tuned for thin PET. Pick the R family for shiny surfaces; pick the B family for clear plastic.
What reflector and cable does the E3Z-R86 need?
The reflector is sold separately. Use the E39-R1S (40 × 60 mm) for the 4 m range; the smaller E39-R3 reflector drops the range to about 1.5 m. For the M8 connector, add an XS3F-M421-402-A straight cordset or XS3F-M422-402-A right-angle cordset, both 2 m PVC. Use a PUR-cable XS3F cordset for sub-zero or washdown areas.
Why is the rated range on the E3Z-R86 only 4 m, not 10 m?
The MSR polarising filter blocks about half of the returned light, so the maximum reliable range is shorter than a non-MSR retro sensor. Omron's plain E3Z-R61 / R81 with the E39-R1S reaches 4 m as well, and the through-beam E3Z-T family reaches 15 m or 30 m when a longer range is needed. The 4 m figure is the worst-case with the standard E39-R1S reflector and the datasheet's reference target.
