Product Overview

The Omron E3Z-B86 is a compact retro-reflective photoelectric sensor built to detect clear, thin-walled PET bottles on a conveyor or at a filler. It uses Omron's Inner View optical system, so it does not need a polarising filter to ignore reflections from shiny plastic. The set detects a 500 ml bottle (65 mm diameter) at 500 mm when paired with the E39-R1S reflector, which is sold separately. The PNP open-collector output switches on the control line when the beam is broken, which matches the input style of most modern PLCs. A pre-fitted 4-pin M8 connector accepts any standard XS3F cordset.

Why the B family is different from a normal retro sensor

Standard retro-reflective sensors miss clear bottles because the light passes through the target instead of breaking the beam. The E3Z-B series handles that with a tilted optical geometry that watches for the small change in returned light, without relying on polarisation. A second pair, the E3Z-B82 / E3Z-B87, uses the same optical head for a 2 m range. If a clear bottle can pass within 500 mm of the sensor head, the B86 is enough. If bottles pass further away, look at B82 / B87 or move to a longer reflector distance.

Picking the right variant

E3Z-B86 is the PNP version on an M8 4-pin connector. Choose E3Z-B81 2M for a 2 m pre-wired NPN lead, E3Z-B66 for a 2 m pre-wired PNP, or E3Z-B67 for an NPN M8 connector. For shiny, non-clear objects, the MSR-equipped E3Z-R86 is the better pick because its polarised beam ignores mirror-like reflections.

Before ordering

Order an E39-R1S reflector (40 × 60 mm) for the 500 mm range. Allow at least 80 mm between the sensor and the reflector to stay above the minimum sensing distance. Bottles must pass at least 500 mm from the sensor face. Pick a light-on or dark-on mode with the L/D selector on the back, and use the one-turn sensitivity adjuster to fine-tune at commissioning.

FAQ for E3Z-B86

What is the difference between E3Z-B86 and E3Z-R86?
Both are cuboid E3Z retro-reflective sensors on an M8 4-pin connector, but they detect different targets. E3Z-B86 is the clear-bottle model without MSR, so it ignores internal reflections from thin PET. E3Z-R86 has MSR (polarised red light) and a 4 m range, so it suits shiny, mirror-like objects. Pick the B family for clear plastic; pick the R family for shiny surfaces.
What reflector and cable does the E3Z-B86 need?
The reflector is sold separately. Use the E39-R1S (40 × 60 mm) for the 500 mm range stated in the datasheet. For the M8 connector, add an XS3F-M421-402-A straight cordset or XS3F-M422-402-A right-angle cordset, both 2 m PVC. A 5 m PUR version (XS3F-M421-405-L) is available for low-temperature or washdown areas.
Can the E3Z-B86 detect coloured or opaque bottles too?
Yes, but it is tuned for clear plastic. A 500 ml clear round bottle is the standard test object, and the E3Z-B82 / E3Z-B87 pair gives 2 m for larger or further-away objects. For coloured glass or opaque containers, a standard E3Z-R retro-reflective sensor is usually a cheaper, longer-range choice.
