Product Overview

The Omron E3Z-LS61 is a compact BGS-reflective (background-suppression) photoelectric sensor with a built-in amplifier. A 5-turn endless pot behind the side cover sets the detection distance anywhere from 20 mm to 200 mm on white paper; once set, the sensor ignores anything behind the set point, including shiny machine surfaces or moving operators. The light source is a visible red 680 nm LED (NOT a laser) — the LS sub-family name refers to the distance-settable ("L-set") BGS behaviour, not to a laser emitter. The sensing window is small enough to ignore colour variations between the target and the background, which is the main reason to pick BGS over a regular diffuse-reflective sensor like the E3Z-D61.

The LS61 is the NPN open-collector sibling in the E3Z-LS family, supplied with a 4-core pre-wired 2 m oil-resistant cable. Use it with any NPN-sinking PLC input, including the CJ / CS / CP1L / CP2E / NX input modules. Output is NPN open-collector, 100 mA max at 26.4 VDC, with a Light-ON / Dark-ON slide switch on the back for the right logic per cabinet. The housing is IP67 ABS plastic with a 1 ms response time, making it a fit for conveyor detection, stack-height confirmation, and small-parts presence checks on packaging and assembly lines.

Choosing the right E3Z-LS variant

The last two digits of the model code pick the cable: 1 = pre-wired 2 m, 3 = M8 pigtail 0.3 m, 6 = M8 4-pin connector, 8 = M12 4-pin connector. The middle digit 6 means NPN output polarity (PNP is the LS8x code). So E3Z-LS61 is pre-wired NPN; pick E3Z-LS66 for M8 NPN, E3Z-LS86 for M8 PNP, or E3Z-LS81 for pre-wired PNP. The LS6x / LS8x are the LED BGS-reflective family — not lasers. The laser BGS sensor in the same housing is the E3Z-LL61 / E3Z-LL86.

Before ordering

Set the detection distance before mounting. White paper reaches the full 200 mm; black paper shortens the practical range to 40-160 mm. Mounting height should be 20-200 mm above the target, with the 5-turn pot turning clockwise to increase range and counter-clockwise to decrease. If your PLC expects a sourcing input, switch to the E3Z-LS81 PNP model — the LS61 will not pull up the input. For dust, oil, or washdown, switch to the E3FA-RN11 or E3FB-B61 in a stainless / nickel-plated brass housing instead.

FAQ for E3Z-LS61

Is the E3Z-LS61 a laser sensor?
No. The "L" in the model code stands for "distance-settable" ("L-set"), not "laser". The light source is a visible red 680 nm LED. The laser BGS sensor in the same E3Z housing is the E3Z-LL61 (NPN) / E3Z-LL86 (PNP). Pick the LL family only when you need the tiny laser spot for precise positioning.
What does the "1" at the end of E3Z-LS61 mean?
The last two digits pick the cable type: 1 = pre-wired 2 m, 3 = M8 pigtail 0.3 m, 6 = M8 4-pin connector, 8 = M12 4-pin connector. E3Z-LS61 is therefore the NPN, BGS-reflective, pre-wired 2 m version. For an M8 connector on the housing instead of a fixed cable, switch to E3Z-LS66.
How far can the E3Z-LS61 detect a target?
On white paper 100×100 mm the detection range is 20-200 mm with the 5-turn pot set anywhere in the band. On black 100×100 mm paper the practical range drops to 40-160 mm because dark surfaces reflect less light back to the sensor. Anything beyond 200 mm is ignored as background, which is the point of BGS.
Can the E3Z-LS61 connect to a PNP / sourcing PLC input?
No. The LS61 has an NPN (sinking) output, so it pulls the load to 0 V on detection. For PNP sourcing inputs, use the E3Z-LS81 (pre-wired 2 m) or E3Z-LS86 (M8 connector). The output mode slide switch on the back of the LS61 selects Light-ON or Dark-ON — that is the only setting that toggles the output logic, not the polarity.
