Product Overview

The E3Z-LL61 is the NPN-output member of the E3Z-LL family of compact laser photoelectric sensors with distance-settable (BGS = Background Suppression) technology. Unlike diffuse-reflective sensors that detect any target within range regardless of position, BGS sensors use a position-sensitive detector (PSD) to detect only targets within a settable distance window — everything closer than the set threshold is ignored, and everything beyond is treated as background. The E3Z-LL61 lets you set the detection threshold anywhere from 40 to 300 mm for white paper targets (or 40 to 160 mm for black paper targets) using the rear-face 6-turn potentiometer.

BGS technology vs standard diffuse-reflective

The E3Z-LL61's BGS principle solves a fundamental limitation of standard diffuse-reflective sensors (E3Z-D8x): they cannot distinguish between a target close to the sensor and a target far away — both return signal. On a conveyor with parts of varying height, a diffuse sensor might detect a tall part standing 200 mm away and a short part at 50 mm as the same signal level. The BGS sensor's PSD detects the angle of the returned light — closer targets reflect light at a different angle than farther targets — and compares this to the threshold set by the potentiometer.

Sensitivity adjustment, laser safety, and target material

The 6-turn potentiometer on the rear face sets the detection threshold. With the target at the desired detection distance, rotate the trimmer counter-clockwise (decrease threshold) until the yellow indicator just turns OFF (sensor no longer detects the target). Then rotate clockwise (increase threshold) until the indicator just turns ON. The optimal setting is one half-turn clockwise beyond the 'just ON' point — this gives the most reliable detection across minor target variations (color, reflectivity, surface finish).
