Product Overview

The E3Z-T86 detects any opaque object that passes between a matched emitter and receiver pair, with a sensing range up to 15 m. Through-beam is the most reliable of the three sensing modes: it ignores target color and reflectivity, works on shiny or dark surfaces, and isn't affected by ambient light. The PNP output suits North American / European wiring (sourcing into a PNP-compatible PLC input), and the M8 4-pin connector lets you swap a sensor without re-wiring — just unplug and replace.

When to pick this vs the other 15 m through-beam siblings

Pick T86 (this SKU) when you want PNP with an M8 connector — the modular pick for fast replacement. Pick T81 2M (already done) for the same PNP output with a pre-wired 2 m cable — lower cost when the sensor won't be replaced often. Pick T66 if your PLC expects NPN inputs. Pick T87 if the parts move faster than ~5 m/s and you need 0.5 ms response instead of 1 ms. For shorter-range detection (under 5 m), a diffuse-reflective (E3Z-D81) or retro-reflective (E3Z-R61) sensor on one side of the conveyor is cheaper and easier to mount.

Before ordering

You'll need an M8 4-pin cable for both the emitter and the receiver — they're sold separately (Omron XS3F-M421-402-A 2 m is the typical pick). The receiver's white wire selects Dark-ON (output ON when the beam breaks — right for object detection) or Light-ON (output ON when the beam is clear — right for safety beams). At long range, align the receiver within a few degrees of the emitter axis; the green stability LED on the receiver confirms a clean signal.

Key Features

  • 15 m through-beam sensing range (infrared LED, eye-safe)
  • PNP output (sourcing) for PNP-compatible PLC inputs
  • M8 4-pin connector for tool-free sensor replacement
  • Light-ON / Dark-ON selectable via white wire
  • Works on any opaque object (ignores color and reflectivity)
  • IP67 rated, PBT housing for coolant / oil environments
  • Orange operation LED + green stability LED on receiver
  • 12-24 VDC supply, 100 mA load
  • SKU: E3Z-T86
  • Series: E3Z-T86

Best-Fit Applications

  • Wide conveyor line object detection and counting
  • Parking gate or automatic-door safety beam
  • Large machine perimeter guard (10-15 m)
  • Pallet or carton presence detection at the end of line
  • Part-present detection on a pick-and-place station

Buying Checklist

  • Pick E3Z-T86 (this SKU) for 15 m through-beam PNP with M8 connector
  • Pick E3Z-T81 (already done) for the same output with a pre-wired cable
  • Pick E3Z-T66 for 15 m through-beam NPN with M8 connector
  • Pick E3Z-D81 (already done) for 100 mm diffuse-reflective (single-sided)
  • Pick E3Z-R61 (already done) for 4 m retro-reflective (single-sided)
  • Order the XS3F-M421-402-A 2 m M8 cable separately (one per emitter and receiver)

FAQ for E3Z-T86

What's the difference between E3Z-T86 and E3Z-T81?
Same 15 m range, PNP output, and electrical specs. T81 (already done) has a pre-wired 2 m cable attached to the body — cheaper, but you have to re-wire to replace. T86 (this SKU) has an M8 connector — slightly more expensive, but you can swap a sensor by unplugging the M8 cable.
How do I choose Light-ON vs Dark-ON mode?
Use the white wire on the M8 connector: leave it open (or tie to 0 V) for Dark-ON (output ON when an object breaks the beam — the standard pick for object detection). Tie white to +V for Light-ON (output ON when the beam is clear — the right pick for safety-beam applications where you want a fault signal when the beam breaks).
Can the E3Z-T86 detect transparent objects?
No. Through-beam works by blocking light, so transparent or semi-transparent objects (clear glass, film, translucent bottles) may pass through without interrupting the beam. Use a polarized retro-reflective sensor (E3Z-R81 / R86) or a specialized transparent-detection sensor for clear objects.
What cable do I need?
One M8 4-pin female cable per sensor (emitter and receiver). The standard Omron pick is the XS3F-M421-402-A (2 m straight); 5 m and 10 m versions exist too. Third-party M8 4-pin cables from Phoenix Contact, Lumberg, or Binder work as well.
Is the E3Z-T86 suitable for outdoor use?
Yes, with care. IP67 handles rain and splashes, but mount the receiver out of direct sunlight (which can saturate the sensor), use weatherproof cable glands, and clean the lenses periodically. For harsher outdoor exposure, step up to the E3ZM series (stainless steel, IP69K).
