Product Overview

The Omron CJ1W-CIF11 is a small RS-232C to RS-422A / RS-485 converter pigtail for the SYSMAC CS/CJ series. Plug the captive D-Sub 9-pin head into any built-in RS-232C port on a CS/CJ CPU (CJ1H, CJ1M, CJ2H, CJ2M peripheral port or built-in RS-232C) or onto the RS-232C port of a CJ1W-SCU21-V1 / CJ1W-SCU41-V1 serial communication unit, and break out a 5-pin RS-422A or RS-485 terminal block on the output end. The converter runs up to 500 m of cable and sets 4-wire RS-422A full duplex, 4-wire RS-485 half duplex, or 2-wire RS-485 half duplex from a DIP switch on the converter body.

Why an external converter and not a slot card?

The CJ1W-CIF11 hangs off an existing RS-232C port -- it is NOT an option board that slots into the CPU. The CPU option-board slot on the CJ front face is consumed by other cards (RS-232C option board, analog I/O option board); an open RS-232C port elsewhere is the typical pickup point. The CIF11 is the right answer when the user already has an RS-232C port and needs RS-422A 1:N -- not when a slot-board is desired. For an RS-422A / RS-485 OPTION BOARD (slot-mount on CP1L / CP1H), pick the CP1W-CIF11 (the model number is similar but the form factor is different). For an isolated RS-485 option board on a CP1L / CP1H, pick the CP1W-CIF12 (note: the CP-series isolated board is a different model from the CJ1W-CIF11).

4-wire vs 2-wire DIP switch

A DIP switch on the converter body selects between 4-wire RS-422A full duplex (the typical 1:N multidrop pick), 4-wire RS-485 half duplex, and 2-wire RS-485 half duplex. Set the terminating resistor (220 ohm on / off) on the two end nodes of a multidrop chain. The converter is powered from the DTR / RTS handshake lines on the host RS-232C port -- no external 5 / 24 VDC supply is needed.

Before ordering

Confirm the host CPU has a spare RS-232C port (the CJ1M-CPU12 has one built-in, the CJ1W-SCU21-V1 has two). For 1:N multidrop wiring across multiple NS / NB HMIs or Modbus-RTU slaves, the CIF11 plus a single RS-232C port turns the host into a 1:N drop on the wire. Order one CIF11 per CPU / SCU RS-232C port converted -- the CIF11 is a passive adapter and cannot be daisy-chained.

FAQ for CJ1W-CIF11

Is the CJ1W-CIF11 an option board that slots into the CJ CPU?
No. The CJ1W-CIF11 is a converter pigtail -- it has a captive D-Sub 9-pin head that plugs into an existing RS-232C port, and a 5-pin terminal block on the other end. It does not consume the CPU option-board slot. Pick the CP1W-CIF11 when an RS-422A / RS-485 OPTION BOARD is needed -- that is a different model designed for a CP1L / CP1H option board slot.
What RS-232C ports does the CJ1W-CIF11 work with?
Any built-in RS-232C D-Sub 9-pin port on a CS1H / CS1G / CJ1H / CJ1M / CJ2H / CJ2M CPU, the peripheral port of the same CPUs (the CJ1M / CJ2M peripheral port runs RS-232C at the higher baud rates), or the RS-232C port of a CJ1W-SCU21-V1 / CJ1W-SCU41-V1 / CS1W-SCU21-V1 serial communication unit. The CIF11 cannot be used with a USB port, a peripheral-only port that has been reconfigured for tool bus, or the option-board RS-232C slot on the CJ CPU when the slot is already populated with another card.
Does the CJ1W-CIF11 need an external power supply?
No. The CIF11 draws its operating power from the DTR and RTS handshake lines on the host RS-232C port -- no separate 5 or 24 VDC supply is needed and no power terminals are present on the output terminal block. The handshake lines must be enabled in the host serial-port settings (CX-Programmer / Sysmac Studio serial-port mode selection); if the host sets the port in 'no handshake' mode the converter may not power up.
Can the CJ1W-CIF11 drive two or three RS-422A multidrop drops?
Yes. Set the DIP switch on the converter body to 4-wire RS-422A full duplex, set the terminating resistor ON at the two end nodes (typically the host end and the furthest slave), and wire the SDA / SDB / RDA / RDB terminals to the matching terminals on each slave in parallel. Maximum cable run is 500 m total, and the baud rate is the same as the host RS-232C port (up to 38.4 kbps on the CJ1W-SCU21-V1 / SCU41-V1, up to 115.2 kbps on the SCU@2 high-speed type). For more than 32 drops, switch to a true RS-422A star-distribution scheme with multiple port repeaters.
