Product Overview
The Omron CJ1W-MD232 puts 16 DC inputs and 16 PNP (sourcing) transistor outputs on a single 31 mm slim slot for CJ-series PLCs. Each input reads 24 VDC at 7 mA; each output switches up to 0.5 A from a 12-24 VDC source. Total output budget is 2 A per module — plan the 24 VDC supply for the worst case of all 16 outputs ON. The MIL connector on the front face takes a separate wiring harness.
When a mixed module is the right pick
A mixed I/O module is the natural fit for a small station where you need a handful of inputs and a handful of outputs in one slot — typical on packaging skids, OEM option panels, and retrofits where the rack is already full. If you need a dense input bank or a dense output bank, a dedicated 32- or 64-point module is cheaper per point and easier to wire.
PNP sourcing vs NPN sinking
The MD232 sources positive voltage to the load — the right match for modern European wiring and for PNP sensors feeding the inputs. If your field devices expect a negative common, pick CJ1W-MD231 (NPN sink) instead. The two modules use the same MIL pinout logic but the polarity is not interchangeable.
Before ordering
The MIL connector needs a separate wiring harness (XW2Z-series or equivalent) — the module ships without one. The MIL version also has per-point short-circuit detection that flags a bad output in the CJ CPU without dropping the rest of the bank. The unit draws 130 mA at 5 VDC from the CJ backplane.
Key Features
- 16 DC inputs (24 VDC, 7 mA) and 16 PNP sourcing outputs in one module
- 0.5 A per output point, 2 A per module maximum
- Slim 31 mm slot — half the width of a 64-point module
- MIL connector with per-point short-circuit detection and alarm
- I/O addresses as 2 words (1 word in, 1 word out)
- ON/OFF response time adjustable from 0 to 32 ms in the CPU settings
- 130 mA internal current draw from the CJ backplane at 5 VDC
- SKU: CJ1W-MD232
- Series: CJ1W I/O unit for CJ-series PLCs
- Voltage: 24 VDC
- I/O: 16 I/O
Best-Fit Applications
- Small station with a handful of sensor inputs and valve outputs on a CJ rack
- OEM option panel where input and output count change between machine variants
- Retrofit adding a couple of inputs and a couple of outputs to a full rack
- Carton sealer station on a packaging line driving one heater and a few sensors
- Utility skid combining level switches, pressure switches, and a couple of relay coils
Buying Checklist
- Choose CJ1W-MD232 for 16-in/16-out PNP sourcing on a single slim 31 mm slot; pick CJ1W-MD231 if you need NPN sinking instead.
- Plan a 24 VDC supply rated for the worst case of 16 outputs ON at 0.5 A — that is 2 A per module.
- Order an XW2Z-series MIL wiring harness separately; the module ships without one.
- Pick a 32- or 64-point dedicated input or output module if you only need I/O on one side — it is cheaper per point.
- Use the per-point short-circuit alarm to catch a stuck relay coil or miswired output before it drops the rest of the bank.
