Product Overview
The Omron CJ1W-OD261 is the 64-point NPN (sinking) transistor output unit for CJ-series PLCs. It packs four commons of sixteen outputs each on a slim front face that occupies one slot on the CJ backplane, giving a high-density output block for solenoid banks, indicator stacks, and motor contactor coils in cabinets where panel real estate is the limiting factor. The unit runs on a separate DC 12-24 V load supply fed through the connector, with the logic supply taken from the CJ backplane.
How the OD261 fits in the OD2xx lineup
The OD2xx family is the CJ-series transistor output set. The last digit of the first group signals polarity: 1 = NPN (sinking, useful with Asian / DC-sinking inputs and with loads tied to +V), 2 = PNP (sourcing, useful with European / DC-sourcing inputs and with loads tied to 0 V). The middle digit sets the point count: OD201 / OD202 = 8 points, OD211 / OD212 = 16 points, OD231 / OD232 = 32 points, OD261 / OD262 = 64 points. The OD263 adds short-circuit and wire-break detection on top of the OD261 base for diagnostic panels. The OD2x4 family is the PNP short-protect counterpart. The OD211 / OD231 / OD261 do NOT have per-point short-circuit detection — add a per-point fuse block on the field side or step up to the OD213 / OD233 / OD263 for the diagnostic feedback.
Current budget and connector pin-out
Per point the OD261 sinks up to 0.3 A; per common (16 points sharing a single return) up to 1.6 A; per unit up to 6.4 A with all 64 points ON. Plan the field wiring so that the loads on any one common do not exceed 1.6 A combined, or the internal common fuse will clear. The Fujitsu-compatible connector on the front of the unit uses two 40-pin sockets (C500-CE241 or equivalent) to land the 64 outputs in two 32-conductor bundles. Pre-built cables XG5M-N1632 (3 m) and similar ship with discrete fork or M3.5 ring terminals on the field end — order the right cable length for the cabinet layout, not the shortest that fits.
Before ordering
Confirm the CJ rack has a free slot — the OD261 occupies one I/O slot on a CJ1M / CJ2M CPU rack or a CJ1W-IC101 / IC102 I/O expansion rack. The 5 VDC 170 mA internal draw comes from the CJ backplane; the external DC 12-24 V load supply (50 mA minimum idle per the datasheet) must be wired to the connector's V+ / V- pins, not back-fed through a load. For a PNP output pick the OD262; for an OD261 with short-circuit and wire-break detection, step up to the OD263.

Best-Fit Applications
- 64-point output block for a high-density solenoid manifold on a multi-station assembly machine
- Indicator stack driver on a process panel where each stacklight needs its own PLC-controlled bit
- 64-coil sequential control on a packaging line or sorting conveyor with a single OD261
- Replacement for two CJ1W-OD231 (32-point) units when one 64-point slot is more efficient on the rack
- General-purpose DC load switching (relays, contactor coils, valve solenoids) in machines needing 64 outputs on one bus
Buying Checklist
- Pick CJ1W-OD261 for a 64-point NPN output unit with 0.3 A per point — pick CJ1W-OD262 for the same 64 points in PNP (sourcing).
- Pick CJ1W-OD231 (32-point NPN) when only 16-32 outputs are needed — saves slot cost and unused-points-to-trace time.
- Pick CJ1W-OD263 (64-point NPN with short-circuit and wire-break detection) for diagnostic panels that need per-point fault feedback.
- Pick CJ1W-OC201 (16-point relay output) when the load is mixed AC / DC or the inrush is over 3 A per point.
- Plan the common-current budget at the field side: 1.6 A max per 16-point common — split loads across commons if a single stacklight or solenoid bank runs above 1.6 A combined.
- Order the matching XG5M-N1632 pre-wired connector cables so that the field-end terminals are M3.5 fork or ring, not bare strands — saves an afternoon per rack.
