Product Overview
The Omron CJ1W-SCU32 is the high-speed 2-port RS-422A / RS-485 member of the CJ-series CPU-bus serial communication family. Pick it when a CJ or CJ2 cabinet needs two long-distance RS-422A / RS-485 lines from one slot and the 230.4 kbps SCU@2 ceiling (the standard SCU-V1 family tops out at 38.4 kbps).
The front face carries COMM1 and COMM2 as 5-pin removable terminal blocks for RS-422A (4-wire) or RS-485 (2-wire / 4-wire). Each port sets independently to protocol macro, Host Link, NT Link 1:N, serial gateway, no-protocol, or Modbus-RTU slave. The RS-422A / RS-485 cable run reaches 1,200 m -- the SCU@2 high-speed advantage over the SCU31-V1 standard-speed 500 m ceiling -- and 32 drops sit on one port.
Power comes from the CJ backplane at 0.40 A on 5 VDC. The SCU32 takes one CJ CPU-bus slot (up to 16 high-function CPU-bus units / 32 serial ports per CJ rack). It is NOT hot-swappable, and Modbus-RTU acts only as a slave. On an NJ-series CPU the per-port protocol list drops to protocol macro / serial gateway / no-protocol / Modbus-RTU SLAVE (Host Link and NT Link are not supported on the NJ via the SCU).
Setup uses CX-Protocol (CX-Programmer add-on) for protocol macro and CX-Programmer over Ethernet (when a CJ1W-ETN21 or CJ1W-EIP21 sits elsewhere on the rack) for general ladder / FINS uploads.
Approvals: UC1, N, L, CE. Made in Japan.
Key Features
- CJ-series SCU@2 high-speed CPU-bus serial communication unit
- Two RS-422A / RS-485 ports on 5-pin removable terminal blocks (COMM1, COMM2)
- Per-port protocol (CJ system): protocol macro, Host Link, NT Link 1:N, serial gateway, no-protocol, Modbus-RTU SLAVE
- Per-port protocol (NJ system): protocol macro, serial gateway, no-protocol, Modbus-RTU SLAVE (Host Link / NT Link not supported)
- Up to 230.4 kbps per port in SCU@2 high-speed mode (standard SCU-V1 family tops at 38.4 kbps)
- RS-422A / RS-485 cable run to 1,200 m (SCU@2 advantage over standard-speed 500 m ceiling)
- RS-422A 4-wire full-duplex or RS-485 2/4-wire half-duplex per port via DIP switch
- Up to 32 RS-422A / RS-485 drops on one port
- 0.40 A from the 5 VDC CJ backplane
- Up to 16 SCU / high-function CPU-bus units / 32 serial ports per CJ rack
- NOT hot-swappable; Modbus-RTU acts only as slave
- Approvals: UC1, N, L, CE; Made in Japan
- SKU: CJ1W-SCU32
- Series: CJ-series CPU-bus high-function unit, SCU@2 high-speed family
Best-Fit Applications
- Two long-distance RS-422A / RS-485 multi-drop chains from a single CJ slot (up to 1,200 m / 32 drops each)
- Mixing Host Link on one port with Modbus-RTU slave on the other in the same CJ rack
- High-speed barcode-scanner / weigh-scale data exchange on RS-422A at 230.4 kbps
- Bridging RS-422A VFD banks to a CJ / CJ2 PLC when the SCU-V1 500 m / 38.4 kbps is not enough
- Modbus-RTU slave bridge for a third-party SCADA / HMI talking to the CJ over FINS serial gateway
- Pair with an NT-AL001 link adapter on a CJ1W-SCU22 (NOT on this SKU) for 1:N RS-422A at 500 m
Buying Checklist
- Pick the CJ1W-SCU32 when the cabinet needs two long-distance RS-422A / RS-485 ports in one slot and the SCU@2 230.4 kbps / 1,200 m ceiling.
- Pick the CJ1W-SCU22 instead when both ports should be RS-232C.
- Pick the CJ1W-SCU42 when the cabinet needs one RS-232C and one RS-422A / RS-485 (mixed-port)
- Pick the CJ1W-SCU31-V1 for a standard-speed 2 x RS-422A / RS-485 (38.4 kbps / 500 m) spare replacement
- Pick the CJ1W-SCU21-V1 when the cabinet needs 2 x RS-232C on standard-speed
- Confirm spare CJ CPU-bus slots -- the SCU32 takes one slot and counts toward the 16-units-per-rack limit
