Product Overview

The Omron CJ1W-SCU42 is the mixed-port member of the CJ SCU@2 high-speed serial communication family. Pick it when one cabinet needs one RS-232C point-to-point line and one RS-422A / RS-485 multi-drop line in a single module.

The front face carries COMM1 (RS-232C on a D-Sub 9-pin connector) and COMM2 (RS-422A / RS-485 on a removable 5-pin terminal block). Each port sets independently to protocol macro, Host Link, NT Link 1:N, serial gateway, no-protocol, or Modbus-RTU slave, and runs up to 230.4 kbps in SCU@2 high-speed mode (the standard SCU-V1 family tops out at 38.4 kbps).

Power comes from the CJ backplane at 0.36 A on 5 VDC. The RS-232C port reaches 15 m on a standard cable; the RS-422A / RS-485 port reaches 1,200 m, which is the SCU@2 high-speed advantage over the SCU-V1 standard-speed 500 m ceiling. Add an NT-AL001 RS-232C-to-RS-422A link adapter to convert a port to 1:N long-distance RS-422A comms.

The unit takes one CJ CPU-bus slot (the CJ CPU-bus spec permits up to 16 CPU-bus high-function units per rack / 32 serial ports per system when SCUs are stacked). It is NOT hot-swappable, and Modbus-RTU acts only as a slave. CX-Protocol (CX-Programmer add-on) and CX-Programmer over Ethernet (when a CJ1W-ETN21 or CJ1W-EIP21 sits elsewhere on the rack) cover setup.

What is the difference between CJ1W-SCU42 and CJ1W-SCU41-V1?
SCU42 is on the SCU@2 high-speed family (up to 230.4 kbps, RS-422A / RS-485 cable runs to 1,200 m). SCU41-V1 is on the SCU-V1 standard-speed family (up to 38.4 kbps at standard mode / 115.2 kbps at high-speed mode, RS-422A / RS-485 cable runs to 500 m). Both carry one RS-232C and one RS-422A / RS-485 port. Pick SCU42 for new high-speed builds; pick SCU41-V1 as a like-for-like spare on an existing standard-speed rack.
Is the CJ1W-SCU42 hot-swappable?
No. CJ-series SCUs are not hot-swappable — power the rack down before inserting or removing an SCU42. (The SRT2-series SmartSlice I/O blocks and a few CS1D duplex modules support hot-swap; the CJ1W-SCU42 does not.)
Can the CJ1W-SCU42 act as a Modbus-RTU master?
No. The SCU42 lists Modbus-RTU SLAVE in its per-port protocol menu, not master. Use the SCU as a slave and let the CJ CPU scan it via the serial gateway, or use a dedicated master module if the field device is a slave that the PLC needs to poll.
How many CJ1W-SCU42 units can sit on one CJ rack?
Up to 16 CPU-bus high-function units per CJ / CJ2 rack (CPU plus expansion racks), which gives up to 32 serial ports in the system when SCUs are the limiting factor. Confirm spare slots when planning a multi-SCU build.
