The CP1E-E20DR-A is the 20-I/O point member of the CP1E-E 'basic-model' CP1E family — a compact 86 × 110 × 95 mm DIN-rail-mounting PLC purpose-built for small, standalone machine control where advanced motion or networking features aren't needed. The point breakdown: 12 × 24 VDC inputs (COM common-group) and 8 × mechanical relay outputs rated 2 A at 250 VAC. The 'A' suffix at the end of the part number specifies the 100 to 240 VAC power supply (the 'D' suffix would be 24 VDC).

E-type vs N-type and S-type CP1E siblings

The CP1E family splits into three sub-families with very different feature sets, all using the same instruction set and chassis footprint. CP1E-E (this SKU) — 2K-step program memory, 2K-word data memory, basic instruction set only, no serial port by default, no Ethernet, ladder programming via USB-only or CX-Programmer. The CP1E-E has 2K steps of program memory (each step is one ladder instruction or function block), 2K words of data memory (split between DM and CH bit/word regions), and a single 0.8 ms scan time for a typical 1K-step program. Expansion memory cards don't apply on the E-type (only on the N-type with memory cassette slot). The supported instruction set covers basic ladder logic, timers/counters (256 of each as a default), comparison, arithmetic, increment/decrement, BCD conversions, and subroutine call — adequate for any sequential control application that doesn't need floating-point math or PID loops (use a CP1L-EM or CP1H for PID).

What's the difference between CP1E-E20DR-A and CP1E-N20DR-A?
Same 20 I/O and same AC supply, but the N-model has additional capability: 8K-step program memory (vs 2K on E), built-in Ethernet port for Modbus TCP / Host Link (E-model has no Ethernet), built-in RS-232C and RS-485 ports (E-model has USB only), 16-bit analog slider switches on the front panel (E-model has none), and an option board slot for RS-422 / RS-485 expansion.
Can the CP1E-E20DR-A host CP1W expansion units?
Yes — the CP1E-E supports up to 3 CP1W expansion units via the CP1W-CN811 cable (80 mm). For a 20-point CP1E-E20DR-A the I/O table ceiling is 160 points, so you can add 3 × CP1W-40EDR (40 points each) for a total of 140 I/O, or any combination of digital, analog (CP1W-AD042 / DA021), and communication options (CP1W-CIF11 / CIF12-V1 / ME05M) as long as the total stays under 160 points. How do you program the CP1E-E20DR-A?
Connect a USB cable (Type A to mini-B) between the PC and the CP1E-E20DR-A's mini-B port. Launch CX-Programmer 9.6 (or later), create a new project selecting CP1E as the CPU type, set up the I/O table from the PLC, and you can write/read the ladder program directly. Sysmac Studio 1.0 or later also supports the CP1E (select 'CP1E' as the device family in the controller configuration).
Is the CP1E-E20DR-A discontinued?
