Product Overview

The CP2E-N20DR-D is the smallest member of the CP2E Network series — a 20-point compact PLC with 12 DC inputs, 8 relay outputs, 24 VDC supply, and a built-in Ethernet port. It suits small machines that need network communication (Modbus/TCP, FINS/TCP, or Host Link over Ethernet) without the cost of a CJ-series PLC. The relay outputs can switch up to 2 A at 250 VAC, so they drive small motor contactor coils directly without an interposing relay.

What you get out of the box

The CP2E-N20DR-D has 10K steps of program memory, 16K words of data memory, and one Ethernet port on the front face. There is no USB port on this SKU — programming goes through Ethernet with CX-Programmer. If you need USB on a Network-tier CPU, step up to the 30-point CP2E-N30DR-D. You can add a serial port via a CP2W-CIFD1 (RS-232C) or CP2W-CIFD2 (RS-422/485) option board, plus one CP1W expansion unit on the right side for up to 32 total I/O points. The DIN-rail mount fits a standard 86 × 90 mm panel footprint.

Family placement

The CP2E family has three tiers. The CP2E-N (Network) is the most capable — it adds Ethernet and (on N40/N60) 4-axis linear interpolation. The CP2E-S (Standard) drops Ethernet for lower cost. The CP2E-E (Essential) drops further for the lowest cost. Within the Network tier, sizes go N20, N30, N40, N60. Pick the N20DR-D (this SKU) for the smallest Ethernet PLC; pick larger sizes for more I/O or 4-axis interpolation.

Before ordering or installing

Confirm you have a Network-tier need — if Ethernet is not required, the CP2E-S20DR-D is cheaper. If a USB programming port is required, step up to the CP2E-N30DR-D. Plan one slot each for the optional CP2W serial or analog board on the front and one CP1W expansion unit on the right.

FAQ for CP2E-N20DR-D

How many Ethernet ports does it have?
One. Although the Network tier typically suggests two, the N20 size ships with a single 10/100 Base-TX port. Larger CP2E-N sizes (N30, N40, N60) typically have two ports with an internal switch for panel daisy-chain. If a quote lists N20 as 'dual Ethernet', it is confusing N20 with N30.
Does it have a USB programming port?
No. Programming goes through Ethernet using CX-Programmer. If you need USB on a 20-point CP2E, there is no current option — step up to the 30-point CP2E-N30DR-D, which has a built-in peripheral USB 2.0 Type-B port. Or add a CP2W-CIFD1 RS-232C option board and program over serial Host Link at 115.2 kbps.
What expansion can I add?
Two slots total: one CP1W unit on the right (for example, CP1W-16ER for 16 extra relay outputs or CP1W-20EDR1 for 12 in / 8 out) for up to 32 total I/O, and one CP2W option board on the front (CP2W-CIFD1 for RS-232C, CP2W-CIFD2 for RS-422/485, or CP2W-AD/DA for analog). The analog option board and a CP1W analog unit cannot both be used at the same time.
What battery does it need?
None for basic operation. The program is stored in non-volatile memory, so a power cycle does not lose it. The optional CP2W-BAT02 backup battery is only needed to retain the DM area, retained CIO words, counter values, and real-time clock when the supply is removed. If you never need retained data, you can leave the battery slot empty.
