Product Overview

The Omron CP2E-N40DT-D is the 40 I/O head of the CP2E-N slim network PLC line. The 24 DC inputs and 16 NPN (sinking) open-collector transistor outputs give a 24 VDC machine enough headroom for typical small-line control, and the two built-in 10/100 base-T Ethernet ports handle SCADA polling, an NB-series HMI, and CX-Programmer upload without an extra switch.

Where the N head fits

The CP2E family has three heads. The N head is the dual-Ethernet network CPU (this SKU) for machines that need to sit on a factory Ethernet. The S head is the single-Ethernet slim CPU for machines that need one Ethernet port for an HMI or remote upload, but not factory network integration. The E head is the no-Ethernet essential CPU for stand-alone machines that only need serial or USB programming. Pick the N40DT-D when the machine needs dual Ethernet for SCADA, HMI, and a spare port for tool connection or future expansion.

What the N40 head carries

The 10K-step program capacity and 32K-word data memory cover most multi-page machine programs. The 4 high-speed counters at 100 kHz single-phase read encoder feedback for cut-to-length or indexing. The 2 pulse outputs at 100 kHz drive a stepper or a 24 VDC servo via a pulse / direction amplifier. A single CP1W option board (RS-232C, RS-422 / 485, analog in / out) drops into the front face for a second serial port or an analog channel. Up to three CP1W expansion units extend the I/O to 160 points maximum.

Before ordering

Confirm the supply is 24 VDC -- there is no AC variant of the CP2E. Confirm the output polarity matches the field device (DT = NPN sink, DT1 = PNP source). For clock-driven events, add the CP2W-BAT02 battery (sold separately).

What is the difference between CP2E-N40DT-D and CP2E-S30DT-D?
Ethernet ports and I/O count. The CP2E-N40DT-D is the dual-Ethernet network head with 40 I/O (24 inputs / 16 NPN sink outputs). The CP2E-S30DT-D is the slim single-Ethernet head with 30 I/O. The N40 head costs more but carries the second Ethernet port for SCADA + HMI on a daisy chain, plus a larger program capacity (10K steps vs 8K on the S30). Pick the N40DT-D for networked machines; pick the S30DT-D for stand-alone machines that only need one Ethernet port for an HMI.
How many expansion units can I add to a CP2E-N40DT-D?
Up to 3 CP1W expansion units for a maximum of 160 I/O total (40 built-in plus 3 x 40 I/O expansion). The 40 I/O expansion units are CP1W-40EDR (24-in / 16-relay-out), CP1W-40EDT (24-in / 16-NPN-out), and CP1W-40EDT1 (24-in / 16-PNP-out). The CP1W-8ET / 8ET1 (8-point output), CP1W-16ER (16-point relay), and CP1W-AD042 (4-point analog) are smaller alternatives. Is the CP2E-N40DT-D programmed with CX-Programmer?
Yes. CX-Programmer version 9.6 or later supports the CP2E family with ladder logic, structured text (ST), and function block (FB) programming. CX-One is the bundle that includes CX-Programmer plus the network configurator. The CP2E series shares the same instruction set as the CP1E and CP1L families, so existing CP1 ladder programs move to the CP2E with minimal rework. Sysmac Studio does not support the CP2E -- the CP2E is the CX-Programmer platform, not the Sysmac NJ / NX1 / NX5 platform.
Does the CP2E-N40DT-D have a battery-backed clock?
Yes, but the battery is sold separately. The CP2E-N40DT-D has a real-time clock (RTC) for time-stamped events, scheduled outputs, and astronomical timer instructions. The CP2W-BAT02 battery (sold separately) is required to keep the clock running when the 24 VDC supply is off. Without the battery, the RTC resets on every power cycle. The S and E heads do not have the RTC at all. Add the CP2W-BAT02 on the build sheet when the application uses time-of-day logic or scheduled events.
