Product Overview

The Omron E3JK-DR11-C is an M18 cylindrical diffuse-reflective photoelectric sensor with a built-in amplifier and a free-voltage AC/DC power supply. Unlike amplifier-less E3Z sensors, it carries its amplifier inside the M18 body and accepts the same 24 to 240 VAC or VDC supply that runs most control cabinets. The visible red LED indicator makes aiming simple, and the single-turn sensitivity pot on the back adjusts the 100 mm to 2.5 m sensing range in seconds. Pick the E3JK-DR11-C when you need a 2-wire free-voltage sensor with a real relay contact, not a transistor output.

Why free-voltage and relay instead of DC-only transistor

Most M18 photoelectric sensors run only on 24 VDC and switch a transistor. The E3JK accepts any supply from 24 VDC up to 240 VAC on the same two power terminals. The built-in SPDT relay contact (AC250 V 3 A / DC30 V 3 A resistive) means you can wire the sensor directly to a contactor coil, a counter, or a small motor starter without an interposing relay. The trade-off is the relay's slower 20 ms response and 100,000-operation electrical life at rated load, which matters when counting very fast small parts on a conveyor.

Decoding the E3JK model code

E3JK is the M18 free-voltage photoelectric series. DR marks diffuse-reflective, 1 marks light-ON / dark-ON switch-selectable, and C marks the 2 m pre-wired VCTF cable. Pick E3JK-RR11-C for retroreflective sensing with the E39-R1 reflector at 5 m, or E3JK-TR11-C for through-beam at 5 m. For a 24 VDC-only panel with transistor output, step down to the E3FA-DN12 or E3Z-D61.

Before ordering

Confirm the supply matches the free-voltage 24-240 VAC or VDC range. Wire the brown and blue conductors to the supply, the black and white to the SPDT commons and NO contact, and the yellow to NC. Mount with the supplied E39-L40 bracket, set the sensitivity just past the maximum target distance, and pick the light-ON or dark-ON mode on the rear switch to match the cabinet's logic convention.

Best-Fit Applications

  • Object presence detection on a small conveyor that mixes part sizes and colours on a packaging line.
  • Cardboard carton trigger signal at the palletiser entry point where a relay contact feeds a counter.
  • Level sensing through a clear sight glass on a small process tank filling station.
  • Direct switching of an AC indicator light or signal tower without an interposing relay in the cabinet.
  • Parts detection on a 100 VAC free-voltage cabinet that lacks a dedicated 24 VDC sensor rail.

Buying Checklist

  • Confirm the supply is 24-240 VAC or VDC free-voltage - the C suffix adds the 2 m pre-wired VCTF cable.
  • Choose E3JK-RR11-C for retroreflective sensing with the E39-R1 reflector at 5 m range.
  • Choose E3JK-TR11-C for through-beam at 5 m when targets are irregular or very small.
  • Verify the relay load is within 3 A at 250 VAC - for higher currents, wire the relay output through a contactor.
  • Allow for the 20 ms response in high-speed counting - for sub-millisecond, the E3Z transistor-output family is the right pick.

FAQ for E3JK-DR11-C

What is the difference between E3JK-DR11-C and E3JK-DR12-C?
The DR11-C has the 2 m pre-wired VCTF cable - the DR12-C has the M12 4-pin connector. Pick DR11-C for fixed installations where the cable routes through cable duct; pick DR12-C for machine builders who need to unplug the sensor from the harness during shipment or service. Same amplifier, relay output, and range in both.
Can the E3JK-DR11-C switch a 200 VAC contactor coil directly?
Yes - the SPDT relay contacts handle contactor coils up to 3 A at 250 VAC. The relay is rated AC250 V 3 A resistive or DC30 V 3 A resistive. For motor loads above 1/8 HP, drive the contactor coil from the relay and let the contactor switch the motor. Inrush from motor start capacitors exceeds the relay rating at any continuous motor current.
What bracket and reflector go with the E3JK-DR11-C?
The E39-L40 right-angle mounting bracket ships in the box. For the diffuse-reflective DR11-C no reflector is needed - the sensor reads light back from the target itself. If you switch to a retroreflective sibling (E3JK-RR11-C), order the E39-R1 reflector separately - the sensor itself does not include one.
