Product Overview

The Omron E3JK-DR12-C is the short-range, fixed-mode sibling in the E3JK free-voltage diffuse-reflective family. It runs on the same 24 to 240 VAC or VDC power that drives most control cabinets and uses the same SPDT relay output as the wider-range E3JK-DR11-C, but it trims the sensing range to 300 mm and removes the light-ON / dark-ON selector. Where the DR11-C is the general-purpose sensor with an adjustable mode, the DR12-C is the close-range fixed-mode variant built for dense installs where many sensors sit side by side. Pick the DR12-C when your target stays within 300 mm and you do not need to switch the operating mode in the field.

Why DR12-C and not DR11-C

Both sensors use the same M18 cylindrical body, built-in amplifier, free-voltage 24-240 VAC/VDC supply, and SPDT relay output (250 VAC 3 A / 30 VDC 3 A resistive). The DR12-C trades the light/dark selector for tighter optics and a fixed mode aimed at 300 mm. The benefit is reduced mutual-interference when several E3JK sensors mount close together - the DR12-C uses a different LED modulation, so adjacent sensors do not false-trigger. The trade-off is no field tuning of the mode; if the application needs light-ON or dark-ON selection, choose the DR11-C instead.

Decoding the E3JK-DR12-C code

E3JK marks the M18 free-voltage sensor family. D is diffuse-reflective, R1 is the light/dark switch-selectable variant, and R2 is the fixed-mode 300 mm variant. The C suffix is the 2 m pre-wired oil-resistant PVC cable; the D suffix swaps the 2 m cable for an M12 4-pin connector. Pick the E3JK-DR12-D if the cabinet build uses M12 harnesses and the sensor needs to be unplugged for service.

Before ordering

Confirm the supply matches free-voltage 24-240 VAC or VDC. Wire the brown and blue to the supply, the black and white to the SPDT COM and NO contact, and the yellow to the NC contact. Mount on the supplied E39-L40 right-angle bracket, set the single-turn sensitivity pot to a range slightly above the maximum target distance, and check the orange operation LED during the first pass to confirm reliable triggering.

Best-Fit Applications

  • Short-range object detection on a parts-feeding conveyor where targets stay under 300 mm from the sensor.
  • Small-parts presence check at a feeder bowl outlet where many sensors mount side by side.
  • Carton flap detection at a packaging line entry, inches from the moving carton.
  • Stack-light or status-trigger signal in a 100-240 VAC cabinet that lacks a dedicated 24 VDC sensor rail.
  • Direct switching of an AC indicator, counter, or small relay coil without an interposing relay in the cabinet.

Buying Checklist

  • Confirm the supply is free-voltage 24-240 VAC or VDC - the C suffix is the 2 m pre-wired cable (use E3JK-DR12-D for M12).
  • Choose E3JK-DR11-C when you need light-ON/dark-ON field selection or sensing out to 2.5 m on the same M18 body.
  • Choose E3JK-RR12-C for retroreflective sensing with the E39-R1 reflector at 5 m on fixed-mode installations.
  • Verify the relay load is within 3 A at 250 VAC - for higher currents, wire the relay output to a contactor.
  • Allow for the 20 ms response when counting small parts above 50 Hz - for sub-millisecond, use the E3Z transistor-output family.

FAQ for E3JK-DR12-C

What is the difference between E3JK-DR11-C and E3JK-DR12-C?
Both are M18 free-voltage diffuse-reflective sensors with the same SPDT relay output and same 2 m cable. The DR11-C has light-ON/dark-ON field selection and a 100 mm to 2.5 m range; the DR12-C is fixed-mode and rated at 300 mm. The fixed-mode optical design of the DR12-C also reduces mutual interference in dense side-by-side installations. Pick DR11-C when mode switching or long range is needed; pick DR12-C for tight, repeatable short-range detection.
Can the E3JK-DR12-C switch a 200 VAC contactor coil directly?
Yes - the SPDT relay contacts drive contactor coils up to 3 A at 250 VAC. Rated 250 VAC 3 A / 30 VDC 3 A resistive. For motors above 1/8 HP, drive the contactor coil from the relay and let the contactor switch the motor. Inrush from motor start capacitors exceeds the relay rating at any continuous motor current.
Does the E3JK-DR12-C need a separate amplifier?
No - the amplifier is built into the M18 body. Unlike the E3FA or E3Z amplifier-less sensors, the E3JK family carries the amplifier inside the barrel and runs on the free-voltage 24-240 VAC/VDC supply directly. The trade-off is the larger M18 body and slower 20 ms response versus the 0.5 ms E3FA speed.
