Product Overview

The Omron E3NX-CA6 is the standard 2-output NPN color fiber amplifier with a wire-saving connector. It pairs with any E32-series fiber cable (through-beam, diffuse-reflective, or convergent-reflective) and uses a white LED at 420-700 nm to discriminate color and contrast marks on packaging, labels, and registration marks. The wire-saving connector takes a pre-wired E3X-CN[] cordset or an E3NW-ECT Sensor Communications Unit; the bare amplifier does not include a cable. Pick the E3NX-CA6 for a high-speed registration-mark detector where two output channels are needed (for example, OK / NG and a low-light alarm) without a separate external input.

Contrast vs color detection

The E3NX-CA6 supports two sensing modes. Contrast mode (default) discriminates single-channel RGB light intensity -- the right pick for a registration mark on a printed web where the mark and the web differ in lightness. Color mode discriminates the RGB ratio -- the right pick when the mark and the web have similar lightness but different color (for example, a red mark on a yellow web). Switch modes on the front panel without rewiring. Smart tuning (2-point / full-auto / 1-point) sets the threshold in one or two button presses -- 1-point at 1%-99% of the received light is the typical pick.

Response time

Four response modes cover the speed / stability trade-off. SHS (Super High Speed) at 50 us operate / reset is the fastest and is contrast-mode only. HS at 250 us is the typical pick for a high-speed label line. Standard at 1 ms is the default. GIGA at 16 ms is the most stable mode for low-contrast or translucent targets. Mutual interference prevention supports up to 10 amplifiers on a HS / Standard / GIGA rail; the SHS mode count is not specified.

Before ordering

Confirm the fiber cable is the E32-series (the E3NX amplifier does NOT pair with the older E32-DC200 / E32-CC200 cables -- those need an E3X-NA / E3X-HD amplifier). Confirm the load is 100 mA or less per output when 1-3 amplifiers are connected, or 20 mA or less when 4+ are connected. The temperature derating is the practical limit on a multi-unit rail -- 17-30 amplifiers need to stay at or below +40 C ambient. Pick the E3NX-FA11 2M for the newer high-power blue LED family when 40,000x light intensity range is needed.

  • Color-mark inspection on a label dispenser where a red mark on a yellow web must be detected
  • Discriminating two-color print on pharmaceutical blister packaging
  • Aluminum-foil packaging registration where the mark and the foil differ in RGB ratio but not in lightness
  • Multi-amplifier setup on a sorting conveyor where 4-10 E3NX-CA6 units run in mutual-interference mode

Buying Checklist

  • Pick E3NX-CA6 for a standard 2-output NPN color fiber amplifier with wire-saving connector and 50 us to 16 ms response.
  • Pick E3NX-CA11 2M instead when a pre-wired 2 m cable and 1 output is enough for a single-channel build.
  • Pick E3NX-CA21 2M instead when a pre-wired 2 m cable, 2 outputs, AND 1 external input are needed for a high-function build.
  • Pick E3NX-CA0 instead for a Sensor Communications Unit (E3NW-ECT) slave on an EtherCAT valve manifold.
  • Pair with an E32-C91N 2M M3 diffuse-reflective fiber for a typical registration-mark detector.
  • Pair with an E32-T11N 2M through-beam fiber for a clear-web or transparent-label registration mark.

FAQ for E3NX-CA6

What is the difference between E3NX-CA6 and E3NX-CA11 2M?
Both are standard NPN color fiber amplifiers in the E3NX-CA family. The CA11 2M is the pre-wired version with a built-in 2 m cable and 1 output. The CA6 is the wire-saving connector version with no built-in cable and 2 outputs. Pick the CA11 2M for a single-channel build where a 2 m pigtail is fine. Pick the CA6 for a multi-amplifier setup where the E3X-CN[] cordset or E3NW-ECT Sensor Communications Unit sits in the middle of the rail.
What fiber cable does the E3NX-CA6 use?
The E3NX-CA6 uses the E32-series fiber cable family -- through-beam (E32-T11N, E32-T51N), diffuse-reflective (E32-C91N 2M, E32-D11N), or convergent-reflective (E32-L11N, E32-L51N) -- ordered separately. The E3NX-CA6 does NOT pair with the older E32-CC200 / E32-DC200 lead-out fibers (those need the E3X-NA / E3X-HD / E3X-DA amplifier line). The E32 free-cut plastic fiber can be cut to length on site -- do not bend tighter than R25 mm or the fiber breaks.
When do I use color mode vs contrast mode?
Pick contrast mode (default) when the mark and the web differ in lightness -- for example, a black mark on a white web. Pick color mode when the mark and the web have similar lightness but different color -- for example, a red mark on a yellow web. The mode switch is on the front panel and does not require rewiring. Contrast mode is the faster path; color mode is more stable for low-contrast targets. The SHS 50 us response time is contrast mode only.
How many E3NX-CA6 amplifiers can I mount side by side?
Up to 30 on a single wire-saving connector chain. Mutual interference prevention supports 10 units max in HS / Standard / GIGA modes (the SHS mode count is not specified). The temperature derating is the practical limit -- 1-2 units run -25 to +55 C ambient, but a 17-30 unit rail must stay at or below +40 C. The ECO ON mode (30 mA at 24 V) cuts the heat by about 25% vs the normal mode (40 mA at 24 V) and is the typical pick for a densely-packed rail.
