Product Overview

The Omron E3T-FD11 is the side-view diffuse-reflective sensor in the E3T ultra-thin family. It is a self-contained photoelectric switch with the emitter and receiver in the same head, the light source and amplifier built in, and a 2 m pre-wired cable. The 5-30 mm sensing range on white paper is short -- this is a presence / absence sensor for a small part on a feeder track, a chip on a tape reel, a label on a small package, or a connector pin in a test fixture, NOT a long-distance object detector.

Why the side-view body matters here

Pick the E3T-FD11 (side-view) when the sensor mounts through a thin slot in a bracket or a feeder sidewall, where the head has to fit into a 12 mm gap and the cable exits along the same axis as the mounting holes. Pick the E3T-FD21 (top-view sibling) when the head mounts on a flat surface and the cable exits perpendicular to the mounting plane. The side-view and top-view heads are otherwise electrically identical -- the difference is the body shape.

Where the NPN output fits

Pick the E3T-FD11 (NPN, sinking) when the load is a PLC input that expects a sinking signal (most Japanese PLCs, including the CP1L / CP2E / CJ2 / NJ families). Pick the E3T-FD13 (PNP, sourcing) when the load is a European PLC or a safety input that expects a sourcing signal. Pick the E3T-FD12 (NPN, Dark-ON) when the output should be ON when the part is absent (the Light-ON default of the FD11 inverts the logic for a "present = ON" requirement).

Before ordering

The E3T-FD11 is the complete sensor -- no amplifier and no fiber-optic cable needed. The E32 fiber-optic cable family is the accessory for the E3X-NA / SD / HD amplifier line, not for the E3T. For a longer range or a different sensing principle, see the E3T-FT11 (BGS), E3T-ST11 2M (1 m through-beam), E3T-SR41 (0.2 m retro-reflective), or the E3Z family for the M18 threaded body.

Best-Fit Applications

  • Small-part presence detection on a feeder track or pick-and-place head
  • Chip / component presence on a tape reel or tray loader
  • Connector pin position verification in a test fixture
  • Label edge detection on a small package or shrink-wrap line
  • Ink-mark or registration-mark sensing in a printing / coding station

Buying Checklist

  • Pick E3T-FD11 for a 5-30 mm diffuse-reflective sensor with NPN Light-ON output in the E3T ultra-thin side-view body.
  • Pick E3T-FD13 instead when the PLC expects a PNP (sourcing) input.
  • Pick E3T-FD12 instead when the output should be ON when the part is absent (Dark-ON logic).
  • Pick E3T-FD21 (top-view body) when the sensor mounts on a flat surface and the cable exits perpendicular to the bracket.
  • Pick E3T-ST11 2M for a 1 m through-beam pair in the same E3T ultra-thin body when the target is small and reflective.
  • Pick E3Z-D61 for an M18 threaded diffuse sensor with 1 m range when the mounting space allows the larger body.

FAQ for E3T-FD11

Is the E3T-FD11 a fiber-optic sensor amplifier?
No. The E3T-FD11 is a self-contained photoelectric sensor with the emitter, receiver, amplifier, and output transistor built into one head. The E3X-NA / E3X-SD / E3X-HD amplifier family with E32 fiber-optic cables is a different product line. The E3T-FD11 does not need an external amplifier and does not accept E32 fiber cables -- it is a complete sensor in one housing.
What is the difference between E3T-FD11 and E3T-FD21?
Body shape. The FD11 is the side-view body (~20 W x 12 H x 31 D mm) where the cable exits along the same axis as the mounting holes. The FD21 is the top-view body where the cable exits perpendicular to the mounting plane. Both have the same 5-30 mm range, red LED, NPN output, and 1 ms response. Pick the FD11 for a side-exit cable in a tight bracket; pick the FD21 for a top-exit cable on a flat surface.
Can the E3T-FD11 drive a relay coil?
Not directly. The NPN open-collector output sinks 50 mA at 26.4 VDC, which is enough for a PLC input, an indicator lamp, or a solid-state relay logic input. It is not enough to drive a 250 VAC mechanical relay coil -- use the NPN output to switch an interposing relay (G2R-2-SND DC24(S) or equivalent) if you need to switch a contactor coil or a 250 VAC load.
What is the difference between E3T-FD11 and E3T-FD12?
Logic. The FD11 is Light-ON (output ON when the receiver sees the reflected light from the part). The FD12 is Dark-ON (output ON when no light is reflected -- i.e., the part is absent). Pick the FD11 for a "part present = ON" signal that the PLC interprets as run-permitted; pick the FD12 for a "part absent = alarm" signal that triggers a feeder-empty shutoff.
