The Omron E3Z-D62 is a long-range diffuse-reflective photoelectric sensor in the E3Z cuboid family, with a rated sensing distance of 1 m on 300 × 300 mm white paper. It detects objects by bouncing its own infrared light off the target, so it only needs to be mounted on one side of the conveyor or machine. The NPN open-collector output and the pre-wired 2 m cable make it the standard pick for cabinets with NPN (sinking) PLC inputs — typically Japanese-built controllers and older CJ-series racks.

Set the sensitivity with the single-turn potentiometer on the back during commissioning. The rated 1 m range applies to 300 × 300 mm white paper; dark, glossy, or angled targets can cut that to 500 mm or less. The output is NPN open collector, rated 100 mA — wire it into an NPN (sinking) PLC input or a relay coil. For a PNP input card, choose the E3Z-D82 instead. IP67 means it tolerates coolant splash and dust, but the lens face still needs a wipe-down once a month on dirty lines.

What's the difference between E3Z-D62 and E3Z-D61?
Both are diffuse-reflective NPN sensors in the E3Z family, but the D62 has a 1 m range with an infrared LED (longer reach, invisible beam) and the D61 has a 100 mm range with a red LED (short range, visible beam for easier alignment). Pick D62 for bigger gaps or larger targets; pick D61 for tight fixtures on a parts feeder.
Is the E3Z-D62 NPN or PNP?
NPN open collector (sinking output). It pulls the signal line down to 0 V when the output is ON. If your PLC input is PNP (sourcing), choose the E3Z-D82 instead — same 1 m range, same IR LED, just a PNP output.
What is the actual sensing distance on dark or shiny targets?
The 1 m rating is based on 300 × 300 mm matte white paper. Dark, glossy, angled, or small targets can reduce range by 40–60%. For shiny metal parts, expect roughly 500–700 mm; for matte-black objects, 300–500 mm. The sensitivity pot on the back lets you tune up to compensate — but if the target is unreliable, step up to a through-beam pair.
Does the E3Z-D62 need an amplifier or special controller?
No — the amplifier is built into the sensor body. Wire the four conductors (brown = +V, blue = 0 V, black = output, white = Light-ON/Dark-ON select) directly to a 12-24 VDC supply and to your PLC input or relay coil. No separate amplifier unit is needed.
