Product Overview

The Omron E3Z-D86 is a compact diffuse-reflective photoelectric sensor in the E3Z family with a 100 mm sensing distance, PNP open-collector output, and a 4-pin M8 connector on the rear face. The 100 mm range (rated on a 100 × 100 mm white paper target, with the operating window 5 to 100 mm) covers short-distance detection jobs on conveyors, indexing tables, and parts-present stations where you cannot mount a reflector or run a through-beam pair.

Where the E3Z-D86 fits in the E3Z-D family

The E3Z-D6x / D8x series is the diffuse-reflective branch of the E3Z line. Within it, D86 is the short-range, PNP, M8-connector variant: D81 = PNP pre-wired 100 mm, D82 = PNP pre-wired 1 m, D86 = PNP M8 100 mm (this SKU), D87 = PNP M8 1 m. Choose D86 when you want a 100 mm diffuse sensor in a short body, PNP output, and a detachable M8 pigtail for retrofit or field-replaceable installations.

Infrared LED, not visible red

The E3Z-D86 uses an 860 nm infrared LED emitter, not a visible red dot. That is the right pick when you do not want a visible spot on the target (decorative parts, transparent film, glossy packaging) or where a visible-red sensor could be confused by ambient light. For a visible red spot for fast optical alignment, pick the E3Z-D82 (1 m PNP pre-wired, red LED) instead.

Before ordering

The M8 4-pin connector on the rear face uses the IEC 60947-5-2 pinout: pin 1 = +V (brown), pin 2 = unused, pin 3 = 0 V (blue), pin 4 = output (black). On a PNP sensor, pin 4 sources positive voltage toward the load. Use an XS3F-M8 4-pin female pigtail (PVC for fixed installs, PUR for cable carriers).

Key Features

  • E3Z-D short-range diffuse-reflective photoelectric sensor
  • 100 mm sensing distance on 100 × 100 mm white paper (5 to 100 mm working range)
  • PNP open-collector output, 100 mA max switching current
  • 860 nm infrared LED emitter — no visible spot on target
  • M8 4-pin male connector on rear face (IEC 60947-5-2 pinout)
  • 1 ms response time
  • 12 to 24 VDC ±10% operating voltage
  • SKU: E3Z-D86
  • Series: E3Z compact photoelectric sensor with built-in amplifier
  • Voltage: 12 TO 24 VDC
  • I/O: 100 I/O

Best-Fit Applications

  • Carton-presence check on a short roller conveyor entry where the target sits 50-100 mm below the sensor
  • Label detection on a small-bottle line where the visible red spot from a D82 would confuse the optical eye
  • Part-present signal at a pick-and-place station feeding 100 mm-deep feeders
  • Index-table verification where a reflector is impractical to mount on the rotating platter
  • End-of-stroke confirmation on a small pneumatic slide where the sensor mounts within 100 mm of the target

Buying Checklist

  • Pick E3Z-D86 for a 100 mm PNP diffuse sensor with M8 connector and an invisible infrared emitter.
  • Pick E3Z-D82 (1 m PNP pre-wired, red LED) if you need a longer range or a visible alignment spot.
  • Pick E3Z-D87 (1 m PNP M8 connector, red LED) if you need long range with a detachable pigtail.
  • Pick E3Z-D81 2M (100 mm PNP pre-wired) for a fixed-cable installation at the same sensing distance.
  • Pick E3Z-D62 2M (1 m NPN pre-wired) if your PLC expects an NPN sinking input, not a PNP sourcing input.

FAQ for E3Z-D86

What is the difference between E3Z-D86 and E3Z-D87?
E3Z-D86 is 100 mm short range with an infrared LED emitter. E3Z-D87 is 1 m long range with a visible red LED emitter. Both are PNP with M8 4-pin connector in the same compact body. Pick D86 for short-range jobs where you do not want a visible spot on the target.
What cable do I use with the E3Z-D86 M8 connector?
Use an Omron XS3F-M8 4-pin female-to-pigtail cable. The standard PVC variant is XS3F-M421-402-A (2 m PVC, oil-resistant). For cable carriers or moving-machine applications, use XS3F-M422-402-A (2 m PUR, robotic-grade). Pinout: pin 1 brown = +V, pin 2 white = unused, pin 3 blue = 0 V, pin 4 black = output.
Can the E3Z-D86 detect black or transparent objects?
Diffuse-reflective sensors detect a target when light from the emitter reflects off the target surface back into the receiver. Dark or transparent targets reflect less light and may not be reliably detected at the full 100 mm range. For black rubber or transparent film, shorten the working distance to 20-50 mm or switch to a retro-reflective sensor (E3Z-R86) with an MSR filter.
Is the E3Z-D86 emitter visible to the eye?
No. The E3Z-D86 uses an 860 nm infrared LED emitter, not a visible red dot. The spot is invisible in normal lighting. If you need a visible alignment spot for fast commissioning, choose the E3Z-D82 (red LED) or E3Z-D87 (red LED) instead.
