The Omron E3Z-D62 2M is a compact diffuse-reflective photoelectric sensor for short-to-medium-range object detection. It looks for light bouncing back from the target, so it does not need a separate reflector on the far side of the conveyor. On a 300 × 300 mm sheet of white paper, the rated sensing distance is 1 m. The infrared LED keeps the beam invisible, which suits food, pharmaceutical, and washdown areas. A 2 m PVC pigtail is pre-wired to the back of the housing, so the unit drops into a control box without a separate cordset.
Where a diffuse sensor is the right call
Diffuse sensing is the simplest pick when the target sits in front of the sensor and you can mount a reflector on only one side. E3Z-D62 2M fits part-presence checks at machine infeed, box-height verification on conveyors, and small-part counting on assembly cells. Targets that are dark, glossy, or transparent reduce the usable range, so the unit works best with light, opaque, and matte surfaces.
Choosing between siblings
E3Z-D62 2M is the NPN, pre-wired 2 m version at 1 m. For PNP on a 2 m lead, pick E3Z-D82 2M. For a smaller 100 mm range in the same housing, look at E3Z-D61 2M (NPN) or E3Z-D81 2M (PNP). If the cabinet already runs M8 cordsets, use the M8-connector E3Z-D66 (NPN) or E3Z-D86 (PNP) instead.

Allow 30 % extra sensing distance over the actual target distance, because dark or angled surfaces can halve the range. Pick Light-ON or Dark-ON on the rear selector and set the one-turn sensitivity adjuster against a real target during commissioning. What is the difference between E3Z-D62 2M and E3Z-D82 2M?
Both are pre-wired 2 m diffuse sensors at a 1 m range on white paper, with an infrared LED. E3Z-D62 2M has an NPN open-collector output; E3Z-D82 2M has a PNP open-collector output. Match the output type to the PLC input wiring rather than the cable or the housing.
What is the difference between E3Z-D62 2M and E3Z-D62?
They are the same sensor. The 2M suffix on Omron's pre-wired E3Z models just marks the standard 2 m cable length. On the connector-style E3Z-D66, there is no 2M suffix because the cable is not pre-fitted. Use the suffix to confirm the cable length when ordering a replacement.
Can the E3Z-D62 2M see dark or transparent targets?
Dark surfaces reflect less light, so the usable range on black or dark-grey targets drops to about 30-50 % of the 1 m rating. Transparent targets such as clear glass or PET are unreliable with a diffuse sensor because the beam passes through. For dark or distant targets, choose a through-beam E3Z-T pair; for clear targets, choose the E3Z-B clear-bottle family.
