Product Overview

The Omron E3Z-LL86 is a compact laser photoelectric sensor in the E3Z-LL series, with adjustable background suppression (BGS) and a 20-300 mm sensing range. The visible red Class 1 laser (655 nm) makes a small, easy-to-see spot on the target, so a single sensor can detect small parts and detect objects in narrow gaps where a standard red LED would over-spill. The PNP Dark-ON / Light-ON output is selectable on the rear switch, and the four-pin M8 connector drops onto any standard M8 patch cord. The ABS housing is IP67 rated, so the sensor fits washdown and outdoor panels. It is the standard pick for detecting a small part on a conveyor, the edge of a label, or a connector pin on an assembly jig.

Why BGS rather than diffuse or retro

A regular diffuse sensor switches on whenever light comes back, so a shiny or black background can fool it. A retro-reflective sensor needs a reflector opposite. BGS measures the angle of the returned light and only triggers on objects inside a set window, so the sensor ignores the conveyor belt or any background past the set distance. It is the right pick when the target sits close to a moving surface, or when small colour differences would change a diffuse sensor's reading.

Choosing the right E3Z-LL variant

E3Z-LL86 is the PNP, M8 connector, 20-300 mm BGS laser in the E3Z family. The same sensor in NPN form is the E3Z-LL81. The pre-wired 2 m cable version is the E3Z-LL68. The through-beam laser is the E3Z-LT86, with a separate emitter and receiver for longer-range work. The distance-settable LED is the E3Z-LS86. Pick the E3Z-LL86 when a small laser spot, adjustable BGS, and a PNP output into a sourcing PLC are the goal.

Before ordering

Set the BGS distance with the five-turn adjuster on the back face and lock it with the lock screw. Allow 50 mm minimum distance to avoid the BGS dead zone. For shiny targets, tilt the sensor 5-10 degrees to avoid direct specular reflection. Pair with an XS3F-M8 / M8-4A patch cord when the panel uses M8 cordsets.

What is the difference between E3Z-LL86 and E3Z-LS86?
E3Z-LL86 is a Class 1 BGS laser sensor with a 20-300 mm range and a small, easy-to-align spot. E3Z-LS86 is a distance-settable LED sensor in the same E3Z housing, with a slightly larger spot and a shorter maximum range. Pick the LL86 for small-part detection and tight beam accuracy; pick the LS86 when a lower-cost LED sensor is enough.
Can the E3Z-LL86 detect shiny or mirror-like targets?
Yes, with a small tilt. Aim the beam at 5 to 10 degrees off the perpendicular, so the specular return misses the receiver. Background suppression then reads the object inside the set window. A vertical mount works for matte or slightly diffuse surfaces.
What M8 patch cord pairs with the E3Z-LL86?
