Product Overview

The E3Z-LR61 is Omron's laser retro-reflective photoelectric sensor in the compact 20x11x31 mm cuboid body — the long-range, laser-sharp-spot counterpart to the E3Z-R61 (already done, 4 m standard LED). The 15 m sensing distance (with E39-R1 reflector) is 3.75x longer than the standard E3Z-R61, and the Class 1 red laser 655 nm light source gives a small, sharp spot (~5 mm at 1 m, ~25 mm at 5 m) that allows detection of small features on larger objects.

Decoding E3Z-LR61 within the E3Z-L laser family

The E3Z-LR/LL/LT model code has multiple positional digits that encode light source (L = laser), sensing method (R = retro, L = distance-settable BGS, T = through-beam), output type (6 = NPN, 8 = PNP), and connection (1 = pre-wired 2 m, 6 = M8 connector). The E3Z-LR61 codepoint thus decodes as laser retro-reflective NPN pre-wired 2 m.

Laser vs standard LED retro-reflective — when to choose LR61

The laser light source on the E3Z-LR61 provides three key advantages over the standard E3Z-R61 (already done): (a) Longer range — 15 m with E39-R1 reflector vs 4 m with E39-R1S reflector, a 3.75x improvement. (b) Sharper spot — the laser creates a small, well-defined spot (~5 mm at 1 m, ~25 mm at 5 m, ~75 mm at 15 m), allowing detection of small features on larger objects (e.g., a tab on a passing part, a hole in a sheet, the edge of a label) where the standard LED's wide diffuse spot (~100 mm at 1 m) would average out the small feature.

MSR function for shiny targets

The E3Z-LR61's MSR (Mirror Surface Rejection) function uses a polarization filter in front of the receiver to discriminate between specular reflection (light bouncing off a shiny surface without changing polarization) and diffuse reflection (light bouncing off the reflector with changed polarization). The sensor only sees the light with changed polarization (the diffuse reflection from the reflector), ignoring the specular reflection from shiny targets. This means: (a) Shiny metal parts passing in front of the sensor do NOT false-trigger the sensor. (b) The reflector must be the standard E39-R1 corner-cube type (which randomizes polarization); the cheap adhesive-backed reflectors don't work for MSR.

Best-Fit Applications

  • Automotive body-in-white detection - laser spot detects small features on car body panels where standard LED's wide spot would average.
  • Long-range conveyor package detection - E3Z-LR61 mounted 10-15 m across a warehouse conveyor detects the leading edge of each carton.
  • Shiny metal part detection on a stamping press - MSR function ignores specular reflection from mirror-finish metal; standard retro-reflective sensors.
  • Glass panel detection on an architectural glass line - E3Z-LR61 detects the leading edge of glass panels as they exit.

Buying Checklist

  • Pick E3Z-LR61 2M for laser retro-reflective NPN pre-wired 2 m - 15 m range with MSR for shiny targets, NPN output
  • Pick E3Z-LR81 2M for laser retro-reflective PNP pre-wired 2 m - same 15 m range, PNP output
  • Pick E3Z-LR66 for laser retro-reflective NPN M8 4-pin connector - quick-disconnect installations
  • Pick E3Z-R61 2M for standard LED retro-reflective NPN pre-wired 2 m - 4 m range, lower cost, 3.75x shorter range
  • Pick E3Z-R81 2M for standard LED retro-reflective PNP pre-wired 2 m - 4 m PNP version
  • Pick E3Z-LL61 2M for laser BGS NPN 20-300 mm - for diffuse-reflective small-target detection with background suppression

FAQ for E3Z-LR61

What's the difference between E3Z-LR61 and E3Z-R61?
Both are E3Z-series compact retro-reflective photoelectric sensors with the same 20x11x31 mm cuboid ABS body, same IP67 rating, same 1 ms response time, same NPN open-collector output, same pre-wired 2 m cable, same Dark-ON/Light-ON mode select. The differences: (a) Light source - R61 (already done) uses a standard red LED (660 nm), LR61 (this SKU) uses a Class 1 red laser diode (655 nm). The laser gives a sharper, smaller spot.
What reflector do I need for the E3Z-LR61?
The E3Z-LR61 requires a separate E39-R series corner-cube reflector to operate. Three common options: (a) E39-R1 - 70x40 mm corner-cube reflector, gives 0 to 15 m sensing distance with the LR61. The standard pick for general-purpose installations. (b) E39-R12 - 60x40 mm compact corner-cube, gives 0.2 to 7 m sensing distance. For installations where space is tight and 7 m range is sufficient. (c) E39-R8 - 100x100 mm large corner-cube, gives 0.2 to 10 m sensing distance.
Is the E3Z-LR61's laser safe?
Yes - the E3Z-LR61's laser is Class 1 (IEC 60825-1), which is the lowest hazard class and is eye-safe under normal use. Class 1 lasers cannot cause eye damage even with direct exposure to the beam, even through magnifying optics (within reason). This is the same class as laser pointers, barcode scanners, and CD/DVD players. The LR61 is safe to use in factory automation environments without laser safety glasses or protective enclosures.
Can the E3Z-LR61 detect transparent objects?
The E3Z-LR61's MSR function can detect some transparent objects (translucent plastic, semi-transparent films, lightly tinted glass) because the polarization filter rejects the direct reflection and only sees the diffuse reflection from the reflector through the target. However, for highly transparent objects (clear PET bottles, clear glass panels, water droplets, optical film), the LR61 is not reliable because too much light passes through without being scattered.
