Product Overview

The Omron E3Z-LR86 is a compact retro-reflective photoelectric sensor with a visible red laser Class 1 source for where LED retro-reflective sensors are not precise enough. The M.S.R. (Mirror-Surface Rejection) optical filter ignores the polarised reflection from shiny foil labels, metal surfaces, and gloss cartons, so only the diffuse target signal is detected. It works with the E39-R1 reflector at a 15 m range and produces a small 5 mm spot at 3 m for precise alignment on small parts. The PNP open-collector output drives a sourcing PLC input directly, with Light-ON / Dark-ON selectable on the rear switch. The M8 4-pin connector drops onto any standard patch cord. It is the standard pick on high-speed packaging and assembly lines where small objects, shiny labels, or metal surfaces need to be detected reliably at a long distance.

Where it fits in the E3Z family

The E3Z family splits by function. E3Z-D is diffuse-reflective up to 1 m with an LED. E3Z-T is through-beam up to 30 m with an LED. E3Z-R is polarised LED retro-reflective with MSR up to 4 m. E3Z-LL is BGS laser up to 300 mm. E3Z-LR is laser retro-reflective with MSR up to 15 m. E3Z-LT is laser through-beam up to 60 m. Within E3Z-LR, the '86' suffix is PNP M8 connector; '81 2M' is PNP pre-wired 2 m; '61 2M' is NPN pre-wired 2 m; '66' is NPN M8. Pick the E3Z-LR86 when laser retro with MSR, PNP output, and an M8 connector are the goal.

Why laser retro rather than LED retro

A standard E3Z-R86 LED retro sensor produces a wide beam that misses small features and can be fooled by shiny-label flashes. The E3Z-LR86 laser source produces a 5 mm spot at 3 m — small enough to fit between features on a small part — and pairs with MSR optics to ignore polarised reflection from shiny surfaces.

Before ordering

Pair with an E39-R1 reflector for the 15 m range. Use E39-R2 or E39-R6 for a smaller 200 mm spot at 7 m. Keep line-of-sight between sensor and reflector clear. For transparent objects the E3Z-B PET-bottle sensor is the right pick instead.

Buying Checklist

  • Choose E3Z-LR86 for laser retro with MSR, PNP, and M8 connector.
  • Choose E3Z-LR81 2M for the same sensor with a pre-wired 2 m cable.
  • Choose E3Z-LL86 for BGS laser detection at 20-300 mm range.
  • Choose E3Z-R86 for standard LED retro at 4 m without laser precision.
  • Choose E3Z-T86 for through-beam up to 30 m on dusty or steamy lines.
  • Confirm the E39-R1 reflector is within 15 m and oriented square to the sensor.

FAQ for E3Z-LR86

What is the difference between E3Z-LR86 and E3Z-R86?
Both are compact MSR retro-reflective sensors with PNP and M8 connector. The E3Z-LR86 uses a laser source for a 5 mm spot at 3 m and a 15 m range; the E3Z-R86 uses a red LED for a 4 m range. Pick the LR86 for small parts, shiny labels, or long distances where the laser spot is needed; pick the R86 for general-purpose retro at a lower price.
What reflector does the E3Z-LR86 need?
Use the standard E39-R1 reflector for a 15 m range. For a smaller 200 mm spot at half the range, use the E39-R2 or E39-R6 reflector. Allow at least 100 mm between the sensor and the reflector for stable detection, and clean the reflector face on the same schedule as the line belt to avoid false drops from contamination.
Why does the E3Z-LR86 use M.S.R. optics?
M.S.R. (Mirror-Surface Rejection) is an optical filter that ignores the polarised reflection from shiny surfaces such as foil labels, polished metal, or gloss cartons. Without it, a shiny target reflects the laser back to the sensor and is detected as a fault (light received through the polarised filter). With M.S.R., only the diffuse signal from the actual target reaches the detector, so shiny-label applications detect reliably.
