Product Overview

The Omron E3Z-LS66 is the M8 4-pin connector version of the E3Z-LS distance-settable BGS-reflective sensor. The optical cutoff focuses the receiver on a set distance, so the sensor sees a target only inside a 20-200 mm band and ignores anything beyond it. The 5-turn pot sets the cutoff anywhere from 40 mm to 200 mm on white paper (40-160 mm on black paper) -- useful on a conveyor or fixture where the next part moves between black, white, and shiny finishes and the background drifts between scans.

What the BGS cutoff actually does

A plain diffuse-reflective sensor (E3Z-D61 2M at 1 m) ignores the background only by range limit, not by optical cutoff. The E3Z-LS uses BGS / FGS optics to actually suppress anything beyond the set distance, so a black part on a bright aluminum conveyor reads the same as a white part on a black belt. For applications where the background can drift or the target color varies from lot to lot, that BGS behaviour is the main reason to pay the small step up from E3Z-D to E3Z-LS.

Why LS6x instead of LS8x

The LS6 family is NPN (sinking) and the LS8 family is PNP (sourcing). Pick the LS66 when the PLC or controller expects a sinking input -- common on CP1 / CP2 / CJ-series input cards set for NPN. For a sourcing input, pick the E3Z-LS86 (the PNP twin in the same M8 connector). The last two digits pick the cable: 1 = pre-wired 2 m, 3 = M8 pigtail 0.3 m, 6 = M8 4-pin connector, 8 = M12 4-pin connector.

Before ordering

Match the NPN / PNP choice to the controller input card. Confirm the supply is 12 to 24 VDC, not 5 V or 100 VAC. On multi-sensor installs, leave at least the rated spacing or use the mutual-interference prevention mode so side-by-side sensors do not false-trigger. The visible red LED is around 680 nm -- not a laser, so there is no Class 1 safety paperwork.

Is the E3Z-LS66 a laser sensor?
No. The E3Z-LS66 is a red LED distance-settable BGS-reflective sensor with a visible 680 nm spot. The E3Z-LL family is the laser BGS sensor (20-300 mm range, Class 1 laser). The E3Z-LS66 has no laser-class safety paperwork and can be aimed by eye. Pick the E3Z-LS for color-independent presence detection on a fixed background; pick the E3Z-LL when you need a smaller spot for a small target or a longer BGS range.
What is the difference between E3Z-LS66 and E3Z-LS86?
Output polarity. The E3Z-LS66 is NPN (sinking) and the E3Z-LS86 is PNP (sourcing). Both share the same 20-200 mm BGS range, M8 4-pin connector, IP67 ABS housing, 12-24 VDC supply, and 1 ms response. Pick the LS66 for a sinking input card (CP1 / CP2 / CJ-series NPN mode); pick the LS86 for a sourcing input card. Does the E3Z-LS66 need a separate amplifier?
No. The E3Z-LS66 is a self-contained photoelectric sensor with the emitter, receiver, amplifier, and output transistor built into one housing. The M8 4-pin connector on the rear face carries the 12-24 VDC supply and the NPN output. You do not need an E3X-NA / E3X-SD / E3X-HD amplifier and you do not need an E32 fiber-optic cable -- the LS66 is a complete sensor in one housing.
What cable do I need for the M8 connector on the E3Z-LS66?
A 4-pin M8 female sensor harness with straight or right-angle connector. Omron's XS3F-M321 series (PVC) or XS3W-M321 series (angled) are the matching 4-wire M8 cables in 2 m, 5 m, and 10 m lengths. Pin 1 = brown (V+), pin 3 = blue (0 V), pin 4 = black (NPN output), pin 2 = white (not used on the E3Z-LS66). Use a 4-core M8 cable; a 3-core cable will work for the supply and output but leaves the white wire unterminated at the sensor end.
