Product Overview

The Omron E3Z-LS61 2M is a distance-settable diffuse-reflective photoelectric sensor in the compact E3Z rectangular housing. It detects targets by setting a fixed distance on a 5-turn pot: anywhere from 40 to 200 mm on standard white paper, with a black-paper range of 40 to 160 mm. Beyond that distance the sensor ignores the background, so it sees the target the same way regardless of color, gloss, or surface finish. This makes it the right pick on conveyors and assembly fixtures where the next part shifts between black, white, and shiny without re-tuning.

The -LS body uses a visible red LED (around 670 nm) rather than a laser, so there is no laser-class safety concern at the workstation. The 1 ms response handles parts moving past at moderate line speeds, and the IP67 ABS housing stands up to typical washdown and coolant splash. The built-in mutual-interference prevention lets several E3Z-LS sensors mount side by side without crosstalk — useful on multi-lane conveyor sections and indexing tables.

Why LS6 instead of LS8

The LS6 family is NPN (sinking) and the LS8 family is PNP (sourcing). Choose E3Z-LS61 2M when the PLC or controller expects an NPN input — common on Asian PLCs and older CJ-series DC input cards set to NPN mode. For PNP/sourcing inputs, switch to E3Z-LS81 2M on the same housing and range. The last two digits set the connector: 1 = pre-wired 2 m cable, 3 = M8 pigtail (0.3 m), 6 = M8 4-pin connector, 8 = M12 4-pin connector.

Choosing this variant over a standard diffuse reflective

A plain diffuse-reflective sensor (E3Z-D61 2M at 1 m) ignores the background only by range limit, not by optical cutoff. The E3Z-LS uses BGS/FGS optics to actually suppress anything beyond the set distance, so a black part on a bright aluminum conveyor reads the same as a white part on a black belt. For applications where the background can drift or the target color varies from lot to lot, that BGS behavior is the main reason to pay the small step up from E3Z-D to E3Z-LS.

Before ordering

Match the NPN/PNP choice to the controller input. Confirm the supply is 12 to 24 VDC — higher voltages will damage the sensor. On multi-sensor installs, leave at least the rated spacing between sensors or use the mutual-interference prevention mode so adjacent sensors do not false-trigger.

  • Visible red LED ~670 nm source (no laser class safety requirement)
  • Light-ON / Dark-ON selectable on the rear switch
  • NPN open-collector output, 100 mA max load at 26.4 VDC max
  • 12 to 24 VDC ±10% supply, 30 mA max current draw
  • 1 ms or less response time, 5-turn endless sensitivity pot
  • Built-in mutual-interference prevention for side-by-side installs
  • IP67 ABS plastic housing, oil-resistant PVC cable
  • Pre-wired 2 m cable (2M suffix); -25 to +55 degC operating
  • SKU: E3Z-LS61 2M
  • Series: E3Z (compact rectangular, built-in amplifier)
  • Voltage: 12 TO 24 VDC
  • I/O: 26 I/O

Best-Fit Applications

  • Multi-color part detection on a conveyor where target color varies from lot to lot
  • Presence check at a feeder bowl outlet regardless of background tray color
  • Indexing confirmation on a rotary table where the next station is at a fixed 50-150 mm distance
  • Body-of-can or cap detection in a packaging line that mixes glossy and matte finishes
  • Small-batch sorting fixture where re-teaching per color change is impractical

Buying Checklist

  • Choose E3Z-LS81 2M instead if the PLC input expects PNP / sourcing instead of NPN.
  • Choose E3Z-LS66 when the cabinet uses M8 cordsets rather than pre-wired leads.
  • Choose E3Z-D61 2M for a cheaper 1 m diffuse-reflective sensor if the background is fixed and the part color does not vary.
  • Choose E3Z-LL81 2M (laser BGS) when the target is very small and a tight 0.5 mm spot matters more than the 1 ms response.
  • Confirm the supply is regulated 12-24 VDC; voltages above 30 VDC will damage the sensor.

FAQ for E3Z-LS61 2M

Is the E3Z-LS61 2M a laser sensor?
No. The E3Z-LS family uses a visible red LED around 670 nm as the light source, not a laser. There is no laser safety class to manage in the cabinet. If you specifically need a laser spot for very small target detection, look at the E3Z-LL (BGS laser) or E3Z-LR (laser retro-reflective) families instead.
What is the actual sensing range?
The setting range on 100x100 mm white paper is 40 to 200 mm, and on black paper it is 40 to 160 mm. In BGS mode the sensor detects targets from 20 mm out to the set distance; in FGS mode it detects any object from the set distance to 200 mm or beyond. These are tighter than a generic diffuse-reflective sensor like the E3Z-D61, and the BGS cutoff is what makes the reading color-independent.
Can I use E3Z-LS61 with a CJ-series PLC?
Yes, but only on a CJ1W-ID201 or CJ1W-ID211 DC input unit set for NPN (sinking) devices. CJ1W-ID212 / ID261 / ID262 are PNP / sourcing inputs — for those, swap to the E3Z-LS81 2M, which is the same sensor with PNP output. Mixing NPN sensors into a PNP input module will not register the signals.
How many E3Z-LS sensors can mount side by side?
Up to two with the built-in mutual-interference prevention active. For two sensor installs, mount at least the rated spacing (refer to the datasheet dimension drawing) and enable the interference-prevention frequency set. For dense installs of three or more, switch to through-beam sensors that point in different directions, or plan the layout so adjacent sensors are not aimed at the same target area.
