Product Overview

The E5CC-QX2ASM-800 is a 1/16 DIN (48 × 48 mm) digital temperature controller from the current E5CC-800 generation — Omron's fastest-selling panel-mount PID controller for general industrial temperature loops.

Why 'voltage for driving SSR' vs direct relay output

The Q-suffix E5CC drives a solid-state relay as the actuator — either an Omron G3PE series panel-mount SSR (heater loads up to 200 A) or a board-mount G3NA-D series. The benefit of this configuration: the controller's output is a dry 12 VDC signal (20 mA max) and the actual mains current is switched by the SSR outside the panel. This means no contact wear inside the controller (a relay-output controller like the E5CC-RX2ASM-800 can only switch up to 3 A before the relay bakes), zero arc noise on low-voltage control signals, and zero-cycle-zero-cross switching for proportional-band heater control.

E5CC family positioning

The E5CC sits between the cost-reduced E5CSV (DIP-switch only, no menu) and the larger E5CN (1/8 DIN 48 × 96 mm with dual display and event recording). Pick the E5CC-QX2ASM-800 (this SKU) for the most common configuration — single-loop heater control via SSR with two user-configured alarms. Pick the E5CC-CX2ASM-800 (C suffix) when the actuator is a 4 to 20 mA proportional valve or process meter — the controller outputs 4 to 20 mA current directly without an SSR in the loop.

Key Features

  • 1/16 DIN front panel — slim cutout fits standard 45 × 45 mm hole
  • E5CC-800 generation: reduced 5.2 VA power consumption vs older E5CC's 6.5 VA
  • Universal process input: thermocouple K/J/T/E/L/U/N/R/S/B, Pt100, JPt100, IR sensor, 4 to 20 mA / 0 to 10 V
  • PID control with auto-tuning, self-tuning, and 2-PID control modes
  • ON/OFF control mode selectable for heating-only loops with large hysteresis
  • 12 VDC voltage output for driving external SSR
  • 2 × SPST-N/O 3 A auxiliary outputs — freely assignable to alarms or control stages
  • 100 to 240 VAC supply, 50/60 Hz, with operating range 85 to 110 %
  • SKU: E5CC-QX2ASM-800
  • Series: E5CC-800 (current generation digital PID controller)
  • Voltage: 100 TO 240 VAC
  • I/O: 5 I/O

Best-Fit Applications

  • Heat-seal band temperature control on packaging machinery via SSR-driven band heaters
  • Plastic-extrusion barrel zone control — single-loop PID with SSR-driven band heater, alarm on runaway temperature
  • Hot-melt glue tank temperature on label applicators — auto-tuning handles the slow thermal mass
  • Industrial oven and bakery-proofer temperature — 2-PID control for heat-up rate and soak phase

Buying Checklist

  • Pick the E5CC-QX2ASM-800 for general 1/16 DIN PID heater control with SSR drive and 100 to 240 VAC supply
  • Pick the E5CC-RX2ASM-800 when the heater is under 1 kW and direct 3 A relay switching is acceptable
  • Pick the E5CC-CX2ASM-800 when the actuator is a 4 to 20 mA proportional valve or thyristor power controller
  • Pick the E5CC-QX2DSM-800 when panel supply is 24 VDC instead of 100 to 240 VAC
  • Pick the E5CSV-QT1 when you only need ON/OFF control from DIP switches
  • Pick the E5CN when you need a larger 1/8 DIN 48 × 96 mm display with remote setpoint input or logic outputs

FAQ for E5CC-QX2ASM-800

What is the difference between the E5CC-QX2ASM-800 and the older E5CC-QX2ASM-802?
The -800 suffix designates the current E5CC-800 generation with reduced power consumption (5.2 VA vs 6.5 VA on the older -802 version), updated firmware for improved PID auto-tune, and CE certification to the EN 61812 standard. The functional specifications are unchanged: same 1/16 DIN body, same universal input, same SSR-drive output, same 2-event outputs.
Can the E5CC-QX2ASM-800 drive a 25 A solid-state relay directly?
Yes — the 12 VDC output is short-circuit protected at 20 mA, which is plenty to switch the input stage of any Omron G3PE series panel-mount SSR (input current draw 7–30 mA depending on model). For an external board-mount SSR like the G3PE-225B-VD DC12-24, wire terminal 6 (out) on the controller directly to the +12 V input on the SSR and jumper the SSR's 0 V to the controller's 0 V.
How accurate is the E5CC-QX2ASM-800 over its full range?
Indicated accuracy is ±0.3 % of input span or ±1 °C (whichever is greater), with cold-junction compensation of ±1 °C. For a 0 to 1372 °C type-K thermocouple range that means ±1 °C; for a -200 to +500 °C Pt100 range it's ±1.65 °C. The 2-PID auto-tuning can drive the controlling process within ±0.5 °C of setpoint on a well-tuned electric heater; mechanical gas-fired burners typically hold ±2 to 5 °C.
Can I configure one of the auxiliary outputs for a heater-burnout alarm?
The E5CC-QX2ASM-800 has 2 auxiliary event outputs that are freely assignable. Common assignments: OUT2 = upper alarm (triggers when PV > SV + offset), OUT3 = lower alarm (triggers when PV < SV - offset). For heater-burnout detection (an open thermocouple or stuck relay), configure OUT2 to the HB alarm mode — this monitors the SSR drive duty cycle and the PV deviation over 3 heating cycles. Alternative: use a dedicated K8DS-PM heater-burnout monitoring relay downstream of the E5CC SSR drive.
