Product Overview

The Omron E6B2-CWZ6C is a 40 mm diameter incremental rotary encoder for general position and speed feedback. It delivers A and B quadrature channels plus a Z (origin / index) pulse, with an NPN open-collector output that drops straight into any CJ1W-CT021 high-speed counter or CJ2M / NJ-series encoder input. The 'CWZ6C' suffix means: C = NPN open-collector voltage output, W = ABZ three-phase, Z6C = the Z-phase origin pulse plus the open-collector output stage. The bare base SKU (no P/R suffix) is 2000 pulses per revolution. It runs on DC5-24 V, draws about 80 mA, and the shaft takes up to 30 N radial / 20 N axial load. It is the standard pick for conveyor speed, cut-to-length, and rotary index feedback on packaging and material-handling machines.

Why open-collector NPN at 5-24 V

The E6B2-CWZ6C is one of three E6B2 output styles. CWZ5B is PNP open-collector for sourcing counter inputs; CWZ6C is NPN open-collector for sinking inputs; CWZ3E is voltage output for high-frequency drives. Pick the CWZ6C for Omron CJ / NJ counter cards and most PLC high-speed inputs. For long cable runs or noisy panels, the line-driver version E6B2-CWZ3E / CWZ6C-1 is preferable, but needs a differential receiver input.

Resolution variants

The bare E6B2-CWZ6C is 2000 P/R. Resolution suffixes in this line include 30, 100, 200, 300, 360, 500, 600, 1000, 1200, 1500, 1800, and 2000 P/R. Pick 2000 P/R for fine position feedback, 500-600 P/R for conveyor speed, and 30-100 P/R for simple rotation counting.

Before ordering

Confirm the counter or drive input is rated for NPN open-collector at the encoder supply voltage. Allow for the 80 mA supply current and the shaft load limits when coupling to the driven shaft (use a flexible coupling to absorb misalignment). Ground the cable shield at the panel end only.

Buying Checklist

  • Choose E6B2-CWZ6C for NPN open-collector ABZ output at 2000 P/R.
  • Choose E6B2-CWZ5B for PNP open-collector sourcing output.
  • Choose E6B2-CWZ3E for voltage output to high-frequency drives.
  • Choose a lower P/R suffix for conveyor speed; higher P/R for fine position.
  • Confirm the counter input is rated for sinking NPN at 5-24 V.
  • Confirm a flexible coupling sits between the encoder and the driven shaft.

FAQ for E6B2-CWZ6C

What is the difference between E6B2-CWZ6C and E6B2-CWZ5B?
Both are 40 mm incremental encoders with ABZ phases at 2000 P/R. The CWZ6C is NPN open-collector (sinking); the CWZ5B is PNP open-collector (sourcing). Pick CWZ6C for PLC counter cards that expect a sinking input; pick CWZ5B when the counter expects a sourcing input.
Can the E6B2-CWZ6C drive a CJ1W-CT021 counter?
Yes. The CJ1W-CT021 high-speed counter card accepts NPN open-collector encoder inputs at 24 VDC. The encoder supply is taken from the same 24 VDC rail as the PLC, and the A / B / Z phases wire into the matching counter input terminals. Scaling is done in CX-Programmer.
What cable is recommended for the E6B2-CWZ6C?
Use a shielded twisted-pair cable with the shield grounded at the panel end only. Cable runs over 10 m should use a line-driver version (E6B2-CWZ6C with -1 suffix or the E6B2-CWZ3E) to avoid signal degradation. Avoid running the encoder cable parallel to VFD output cables.
