Product Overview
The Omron G9SP-N20S is a standalone programmable safety controller for mid-size machines that need more than a hard-wired safety relay can deliver — typically several E-stop buttons, guard-door switches, safety light curtains, and mode-select switches wired through custom AND / OR / muting logic. It runs on 24 VDC, takes 20 safety inputs and provides 8 PNP safety transistor outputs plus 6 test outputs. Logic is configured with the G9SP Configurator software using certified function blocks — not a full PLC scan — so programming is closer to wiring a ladder of safety relays than to writing structured text.
Where the G9SP-N20S fits relative to other Omron safety devices
If the safety circuit is a single E-stop driving two contactors, a G9SA-301 (hard-wired safety relay, 3 NO + 1 NC, 45 mm wide) is the cheaper pick. If the circuit is several E-stops and two guard doors that all need to drop the same contactors, the G9SP-N20S is the right size — function blocks like AND, OR, Muting, EDM, and two-hand-control cover the common patterns without writing custom code. For very large systems or EtherCAT-based safety, step up to the NX-SL Safety CPU + NX-SOD400 / SOH200 I/O pair.
Inputs, outputs, and programming workflow
The 20 safety inputs are PNP and accept dual-channel wiring from the safety devices. The 8 safety transistor outputs are PNP sourcing — use them to drive contactor coils or the safety input of a variable frequency drive (VFD) that supports safety functions. The 6 test outputs are for pulse-testing the input wiring (short-circuit detection) and can also be used as standard outputs for non-safety signalling like 'reset required' lamps. Configuration is done in G9SP Configurator on a PC and transferred to the controller via the program cassette — once programmed, the controller runs without the PC.
Before ordering
Order a CP1W-CIF41 Ethernet option board if you need Ethernet / FINS/UDP monitoring or remote reset; the G9SP-N20S itself has no built-in Ethernet. Confirm the 24 VDC supply is in the 21.6 to 26.4 VDC range with enough current headroom for the 8 outputs. The unit mounts on a 35 mm DIN rail inside an IP54 enclosure per IEC 60529. Allow 20 mm clearance on each side for ventilation. For purely hard-wired circuits with no custom logic, a G9SA-301 or G9SB-200-B is more cost-effective than the G9SP.

Best-Fit Applications
- Mid-size packaging machine with 4 E-stops, 3 guard doors, and a safety light curtain, all dropped by AND / OR logic
- Robotic work cell with two safety zones that share contactors but need independent reset behaviour
- Palletiser with muting logic that lets product pass through a light curtain without tripping
- Press with two-hand control and a guard door that needs separate mode-select paths for setup versus run
- Refit of a cabinet that previously used several G9SA relays, consolidated into a single G9SP-N20S function-block program
Buying Checklist
- Pick G9SP-N20S when you need custom logic (muting, mode select, EDM feedback) that a single G9SA / G9SE relay cannot express.
- Pick a G9SA-301 (45 mm hard-wired) for a single E-stop and three contactors — cheaper and simpler than a G9SP.
- Pick an NX-SL Safety CPU + NX-SOD400 output pair when the system needs EtherCAT safety or more than 20 I/O.
- Order a CP1W-CIF41 Ethernet option board if you need FINS/UDP monitoring or remote reset from a SCADA.
- Plan the program offline in G9SP Configurator before commissioning — function-block logic is faster to validate on a PC than on the machine.
