Product Overview

The NX-ECC202 is the high-I/O-current EtherCAT Coupler Unit for Omron's NX-series distributed I/O system, identical in protocol and connector layout to the NX-ECC201 but with a 10 A I/O power supply rating instead of the 4 A on the standard model. It is the head of any remote NX slice where the downstream digital output modules draw more than 4 A at 24 VDC — typical for large banks of 8-point or 16-point PNP transistor outputs driving dozens of 24 VDC solenoid valves, indicator lamps, or relay coils.

When to pick NX-ECC202 over NX-ECC201

Pick NX-ECC202 when the total I/O load of the downstream NX units exceeds 4 A at 24 VDC. Calculate the I/O load by summing each output module's per-channel current rating (typically 0.5 A per channel for PNP outputs, 2 A for relay outputs) over the worst-case loading profile. A 32-channel digital output bank with relay modules and indicator lamps can easily draw 8 to 10 A. Within NX modules, the I/O current capacity of the coupler is the limiting factor: NX-ECC201 = 4 A, NX-ECC202 = 10 A, NX-ECC203 = 4 A (but with 125 µs minimum cycle time).

Wiring and addressing

Power the NX-ECC202 with a 24 VDC supply on terminals A1 / B1 (Unit Power Supply, 24 VDC, 0.75 A) and A3 / B3 (Unit Power Supply Common). The I/O power supply goes to A5 / B5 (I/O Power Supply, 5 to 24 VDC) and A7 / B7 (I/O Power Supply Common) — the I/O supply feeds the digital output modules' load voltage and the analog module field-side circuitry.

Application in a typical machine

On a packaging line or assembly cell, the NX-ECC202 sits in a remote panel about 10 to 50 metres away from the NJ501 or NX102 controller, with EtherCAT running over standard Cat-5 cable. Up to 63 NX I/O units plug onto the right side, providing hundreds of digital I/O points (with the 10 A I/O budget to power them all), analog inputs for temperature and pressure, encoder inputs for tracking, and safety I/O via NX-SL3300. The daisy-chain OUT port can pass EtherCAT to another NX slice or to a third-party EtherCAT slave (servo drive, vision system, remote I/O block) for distributed control.

Key Features

  • EtherCAT Coupler Unit for the NX-series I/O system
  • Accepts up to 63 NX I/O units on the right-side NX bus
  • EtherCAT cycle time 250 µs to 4,000 µs
  • 1,024 bytes input / 1,024 bytes output PDO size per slice
  • 10 A I/O power supply for high-current I/O banks
  • 10 W unit power output for the NX bus logic
  • Two EtherCAT ports for daisy-chain topology
  • Rotary x10 / x1 ID switches for node addressing
  • SKU: NX-ECC202
  • Series: NX (EtherCAT Coupler)
  • I/O: 1 I/O

Best-Fit Applications

  • Remote I/O slice for a packaging line with dozens of 24 VDC solenoid valves drawing 8+ A
  • Large-panel assembly cell where digital output banks exceed 4 A total I/O current
  • Mixing digital, analog, and safety I/O in one high-current NX panel
  • Bridging NX I/O into a third-party EtherCAT master with heavy I/O load

Buying Checklist

  • Pick NX-ECC202 for the standard EtherCAT coupler with 10 A I/O power
  • Pick NX-ECC201 when the slice draws less than 4 A of I/O power
  • Pick NX-ECC203 when you need 125 µs minimum cycle time for high-speed synchronized I/O
  • Order an end cover NX-EC001 separately — required to close the right side of the NX bus
  • Set the rotary ID switches before applying power; addressing on a running system requires power cycle
  • Use shielded Cat-5 cable for EtherCAT runs longer than 10 m in noisy environments

FAQ for NX-ECC202

What is the difference between NX-ECC201 and NX-ECC202?
Identical except for I/O power supply current capacity: NX-ECC201 supplies up to 4 A to the I/O bus, NX-ECC202 supplies up to 10 A. Both have the same 250–4000 µs EtherCAT cycle time and same NX bus interface. Pick NX-ECC202 when the downstream digital output modules in the slice draw more than 4 A at 24 VDC; for most slices with mixed digital / analog I/O, the NX-ECC201 is sufficient.
How many NX I/O units can I connect to one NX-ECC202?
Up to 63 NX units on the right side of the coupler, same as the NX-ECC201. The I/O current capacity (10 A) is independent of the unit count; you can connect 63 low-power units or fewer high-current units as long as the total I/O current draw does not exceed 10 A.
Can I mix NX-ECC201 and NX-ECC202 on the same EtherCAT network?
Yes — each NX slice is its own EtherCAT slave with its own node ID, and the I/O current capacity is per-slice. You can have one NX-ECC201 slice with light I/O (sensors, low-current digital outputs) and another NX-ECC202 slice with heavy I/O (high-current valves, lamps), and the EtherCAT master treats them as independent stations.
What does the TS LED indicate?
TS (Touch Sensor or Terminal Status) is a green LED that indicates the NX bus on the right side of the coupler is communicating with the NX I/O units. Solid green when all units are responding, flashing when one or more units are missing or faulty, off when no units are connected or the coupler has lost NX bus communication. Together with RUN / ERR, it is the primary commissioning indicator for the slice.
