Omron NX-Series Safety & I/O — NX-CSG, NX-SL5, NX-ID/OD/AD/DA
The Omron NX-series is the modular bus family for EtherNet/IP safety and standard I/O on Sysmac platforms. An NX-CSG320 communication control unit or an NX-SL5 safety CPU sits at the head, and up to 32 NX I/O units connect on the local NX bus. Units clip onto a flat cable — the NX bus is not a backplane. We hold 73 NX-series SKUs in Xiamen.
Lifecycle status
Current production
The NX series is Omron's current machine-automation I/O platform and is in production. Omron's discontinuation database records the older NE1A, NE0A and DST1 safety controllers as ending 31 May 2026 with the NX safety series as the replacement.
What to fit instead: NX series replaces the NE1A / NE0A / DST1 standalone safety controllers (end of production 31 May 2026)
Key specifications

How to read an NX unit model number
The NX prefix group tells you the function class. Getting this wrong is how people order a standard unit when they need a safety unit, or the reverse.
| Prefix | Function | Example |
|---|---|---|
| NX-CSG | Communication control unit, EtherNet/IP head | NX-CSG320 |
| NX-SL | Safety CPU | NX-SL5500, NX-SL5700 |
| NX-ID | Standard digital input | NX-ID5142, NX-ID6342 |
| NX-OD | Standard digital output | NX-OD4256, NX-OD6256 |
| NX-AD | Standard analog input | NX-AD2604, NX-AD3203 |
| NX-DA | Standard analog output | NX-DA2603, NX-DA3205 |
| NX-MD | Mixed digital input/output | NX-MD6121-5, NX-MD6256-5 |
| NX-SI / NX-SO | Safety input / safety output | NX-SID800, NX-SOD400, NX-SOH200 |
| NX-ILM | IO-Link master | NX-ILM400 |
Trailing digits are point counts: NX-OD6256 is a 32-point PNP transistor output, 24 VDC, 0.5 A per point and 4 A per unit, 24 mm wide. The -1 and -5 suffixes denote terminal-block variants; NX-OD6256-1 does not exist, while NX-OD5121-1 and NX-OD5256-1 do.
Where these parts get used
- Packaging machine safety stack: one NX-CSG320 head, one NX-SL5700 safety CPU, sixteen NX-SID800 safety input units and eight NX-SOD400 safety output units
- IO-Link sensor hub: one NX-ILM400 on the local bus reading four IO-Link devices and forwarding the data to an NJ501 over EtherNet/IP
- Standard I/O expansion on an NJ501 rack that already carries 32 NX units — NX-OD6256 32-point transistor outputs add digital outputs without an expansion rack
Which model do you need
- Choose NX when your controller is an NJ or NX machine controller and you need modular I/O expansion with EtherNet/IP and CIP Safety.
- Choose the older CS1W-EIP21S instead when your controller is CS1 or CJ1 and you need EtherNet/IP without CIP Safety.
- Choose CJ-series Special I/O instead when you need fewer than about 32 I/O points on a bus and do not need modular hot-swap.
- Never try to mount a CJ1W I/O unit on an NX rack — NX uses an EtherCAT-based I/O terminal architecture and the connector systems are physically different.

Frequently asked
What is the difference between the NX-SID800 and NX-SIH400?
The NX-SID800 is an 8-point safety input unit and also provides two test outputs. The NX-SIH400 is the 4-point safety input. Both are safety input units; the point count is what differs.
Does an NX-SOH200 have relay outputs?
No. The NX-SOH200 is a 2-point PNP sourcing transistor safety output rated at 2.0 A per point. There is no relay-output unit in Omron's NX safety I/O lineup.
How many NX units can connect to one NX-CSG320?
Up to 32 local NX units per communication control unit, including safety units and IO-Link masters. The NX-CSG320 has three communication ports: PORT1 is independent, and PORT2A and PORT2B share a built-in Ethernet switch.
Is there an NX-OD6256-1?
No. That model number does not exist on Omron's site. The unit is the NX-OD6256, a 32-point PNP transistor output at 24 VDC, 0.5 A per point and 4 A per unit, 24 mm wide. An NX-OD6256-5 also exists. The -1 suffix is used on different units such as the NX-OD5121-1 and NX-OD5256-1.
Does the NX bus use a backplane?
No. NX units clip onto a flat cable — the NX-BUSS01 bus cable — and Omron does not describe it as a backplane. This matters when planning cabinet layout, because a flat cable routes differently from a rigid backplane.
Does an NX-SL5 safety CPU go on the bus directly?
The NX-SL5 is used behind an NX-CSG320 rather than acting as an alternative head unit. Together they provide CIP Safety communications over EtherNet/IP while also handling local high-speed safety I/O control with a 50 ms response.
What does the NX-ILM400 connect to?
The NX-ILM400 is an IP20 IO-Link master with four IO-Link channels. The channels accept any IO-Link device, not only photoelectric sensors, so IO-Link light curtains, barcode readers and proportional valves can all sit behind one unit.
