Why does this motor have a brake?
For vertical-axis / Z-axis applications where the load has to be held in place when the servo is de-energised. The brake is spring-applied and electrically released at 24 VDC — so if power is lost, the brake engages and the load is held.
Is the brake powered from the drive or from a separate supply?
The 1S drives provide a dedicated 24 VDC brake output. You do not need a separate brake supply; just route the drive's brake terminals to the motor's brake wires. The drive controls brake release / engage in sync with servo enable.
