Omron Servo — 1S-Series EtherCAT Drives & G5 Drives, R88M Motors
The R88 naming covers two different servo platforms. Drives prefixed R88D-1SN.. are 1S-series EtherCAT units — Omron's current Sysmac servo platform, released 2018, which replaced the Accurax G5. Drives prefixed R88D-K.. are G5 units, offered in EtherCAT (-ECT), MECHATROLINK-II (-ML2) and analog/pulse-train versions. Motors are R88M, and a drive is matched to a motor by wattage, not by model family.
Lifecycle status
1S-series is current production; G5 is the previous generation with no announced end-of-life date
Omron lists the 1S range with active product pages, ESI/EDZ files and datasheet I188E, and sells it through its own stores. For G5, Omron still publishes ordering tables and no end-of-production notice was found — though individual G5 models are flagged discontinued on some regional sites (R88D-KTA5L is one example). Omron publishes I868 "AC Servomotor/Servo Drives - Replace Guide" as the formal G5 to 1S migration document. We found no end-of-production date for any 1S product.
What to fit instead: 1S-series for new designs; G5 remains orderable with no published EOL
Key specifications
- 1S-series drives are EtherCAT only, running CoE with the CiA 402 drive profile. There is no EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP or analog-command version of the 1S range
- G5 drives come in three network flavours: -ECT for EtherCAT, -ML2 for MECHATROLINK-II, and no suffix for analog / pulse-train command
- 1S power range: 100 W to 1.5 kW on 200 VAC single-phase, up to 7.5 kW on 200 VAC three-phase, and 600 W to 15 kW on 400 VAC three-phase
- 1S motors use a 23-bit battery-less absolute multi-turn encoder — no battery, no homing routine on power-up
- G5 motors: the H suffix is incremental encoder, the T suffix is absolute and needs an R88A-BAT01W battery to retain multi-turn position
- Drive-to-motor matching is by rated output wattage. Drives of the same wattage accept 3000, 2000 or 1500 r/min motors of that output
How to read an R88D drive model number
The G5 legend below is Omron's own. The 1S numbering follows the same capacity and voltage idea but uses a different position for the platform.
| Position | Meaning | Values |
|---|---|---|
| R88D-K + T | G5, analog / pulse-train input | T = pulse-train or voltage command |
| R88D-K + N | G5, bus (communications) type | N = network-capable drive |
| R88D-1S + N | 1S-series EtherCAT drive | The 1S range is EtherCAT only |
| A5 / 01 / 02 / 04 / 08 / 10 / 15 / 20 / 30 / 50 / 75 / 150 | Applicable motor capacity in W | A5 = 50 W, 02 = 200 W, 10 = 1 kW, 150 = 15 kW |
| H / L / F | Voltage class | H = AC 200 V, L = AC 100 V, F = AC 400 V |
| -ECT / -ML2 / none | Network | -ECT = EtherCAT, -ML2 = MECHATROLINK-II, none = general input |
| -ECT-51 / 1SAN..-ECT | Safety level | -ECT = STO only, -ECT-51 adds SS1/SLS, 1SAN adds the full STO/SS1/SS2/SOS/SLS/SLP/SDI/SBC set |
| -Z suffix | Country of origin | Z = made in China, no suffix = Japan |
Two things this table is here to prevent: the -ECT suffix means EtherCAT, not EtherNet/IP; and the Z suffix is a country-of-origin code with nothing to do with safety functions. R88H does not appear in Omron's documentation as a G5 successor — if you have been told otherwise, treat that as unverified.
1S safety tiers and the G5 migration
| Model | Safety functions | Note |
|---|---|---|
| R88D-1SN..-ECT | STO | Standard 1S EtherCAT drive |
| R88D-1SN..-ECT-51 | STO, SS1, SLS | Limited-stop and safe-speed options |
| R88D-1SAN..-ECT | STO, SS1, SS2, SOS, SLS, SLP, SDI, SBC | 1S Motion Safety, up to 3 kW |
| R88D-K..-ECT (G5) | STO | Previous generation, still orderable |
Omron publishes I868 as the formal G5-to-1S replace guide. Where a G5 used MECHATROLINK-II or analog command there is no 1S equivalent — the 1S range is EtherCAT only, so the network has to change or the drive stays G5.
Moving from G5 to 1S
The mechanical envelope is close and Omron positions 1S as the pick for new designs, but the drive is not a drop-in: the 1S range is EtherCAT only, so a G5 running analog/pulse or MECHATROLINK-II has no like-for-like replacement. Check the network first. The encoder change also matters — a G5 incremental motor (H) and a 1S 23-bit battery-less absolute motor are not interchangeable on the same axis without rechecking homing and position retention.
Where these parts get used
- A Sysmac NJ/NX cell driving 1S EtherCAT axes where the controller does the motion and STO is handled over FSoE
- Retrofit of an Accurax G5 line to 1S where the machine already runs EtherNet/IP to an NJ controller and the servo bus can be converted
- Legacy G5 axis retained as a spare with matching R88M motor, where swapping the network is not worth the downtime
Which model do you need
- Choose a 1S-series drive for any new build. It is current, EtherCAT, and uses a battery-less absolute encoder.
- Choose the G5 only when you need analog/pulse command or MECHATROLINK-II, or you are replacing a unit in an existing G5 cabinet.
- Match drive to motor by rated wattage — a 400 W drive takes a 400 W motor at 3000, 2000 or 1500 r/min.
- Order encoder and power cables separately; they are not supplied with the drive or the motor.

Frequently asked
Is the R88D-1SN02H-ECT a G5 drive?
No. The R88D-1SN.. range is the 1S-series, Omron's current EtherCAT servo platform introduced in 2018. G5 drives use the R88D-K.. prefix, for example R88D-KT02H for analog pulse-train command or R88D-KN15F-ECT for EtherCAT.
What does the Z suffix mean on an R88D drive?
It is a country-of-origin code. Z means the drive was made in China; no suffix means Japan. It has no effect on the drive's safety functions or its network type.
Does the 1S series support EtherNet/IP?
No. The entire 1S range is EtherCAT. If you need EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP or analog pulse command, you need a G5 drive (R88D-KT.. or R88D-KN..-ECT).
What encoder do 1S servo motors use?
A 23-bit battery-less absolute multi-turn encoder. Because there is no battery, there is no homing routine to run on power-up — position is retained by the drive's standby counter as long as control power is maintained.
Which R88M motor pairs with R88D-1SN04H-ECT?
A 400 W motor at the matching rated output — for example R88M-1M40030T at 3000 r/min. Omron's rule is that the drive's rated output matches the motor's rated output, and a drive of a given wattage accepts 3000, 2000 or 1500 r/min motors of that output. Check the Fits-to field on the individual motor page before ordering.
Are the encoder and power cables included?
No. Encoder and power cables are ordered separately from the drive and the motor. For 1S the encoder cable series is R88A-CR1B0xxNF-E and the power cables are R88A-CA1C0xxSF-E for non-braked motors or R88A-CA1G0xxBF-IE for braked ones. R88A-CAGC series cables belong to the G5 and G7 platforms, not 1S.
Has the Accurax G5 been discontinued?
Omron publishes no end-of-production date for the G5 range and still carries it with ordering tables, although individual models are flagged discontinued on some regional sites. Omron's stated direction is 1S for new designs, with I868 as the formal G5-to-1S replace guide.
