Product Overview
The Omron 3G3AX-MX2-ECT is a field-replaceable EtherCAT communication card for the 3G3MX2 compact drive family. The card plugs into the option slot on the front of any MX2 drive and exposes the drive as an EtherCAT slave to any EtherCAT master - typically a Sysmac NJ / NX1P / NX102 controller. The card supports frequency control, torque limiting, and basic position mode via the CoE (CANopen over EtherCAT) drive profile, and Omron's Sysmac Studio auto-discovers the MX2-ECT as a third-party EtherCAT slave once the ESI file is loaded. Pick the MX2-ECT when an existing MX2 drive panel needs to drop into an EtherCAT network without replacing the drive.
Why ECT instead of the built-in RS-485
Every 3G3MX2 drive ships with a built-in RS-485 / Modbus RTU port on the front. RS-485 is fine for a single drive or a daisy-chain of a handful, but it gets unwieldy on a 20-drive line. EtherCAT gives a deterministic cycle, a single cable to the master, and PDO-based exchange with the same MX2 register map. The cable is standard shielded Cat 5e Ethernet, and the cycle matches the Sysmac task period from 0.5 ms to 10 ms.
Sibling option cards for MX2
Omron offers parallel cards for the MX2 slot. The 3G3AX-MX2-PRT is the PROFIBUS version. The 3G3AX-MX2-ECT (this SKU) is EtherCAT. The 3G3AX-MX2-CIP is EtherNet/IP. The 3G3AX-MX2-ML2 is MECHATROLINK-II. They are field-swappable without re-commissioning the drive itself - only the PLC project needs updating.
Before ordering
Confirm the host drive is a 3G3MX2 model (not the older 3G3MX or 3G3RX). Power down the drive, open the option slot cover on the front, slide the card in, and re-fasten the cover. No separate 24 VDC supply needed - the card draws from the MX2 internal power. The card adds an IN and OUT RJ45 port on the front face; either port can serve as the cable entry, and the other feeds downstream slaves. Settings (drive address, PDO mapping) are made in the EtherCAT master's ESI tool, not on the drive parameter list.

- SKU: 3G3AX-MX2-ECT
- Series: 3G3AX MX2 option card
Best-Fit Applications
- Adding an MX2 drive to a Sysmac NJ / NX1P / NX102 EtherCAT network
- Replacing RS-485 / Modbus wiring on a 10+ drive packaging line
- Synchronising multiple MX2 drives to a single master reference
- Field-replace cable type on existing MX2 installations needing deterministic cycle
- Build a multi-axis conveyor or pump panel under one EtherCAT master
Buying Checklist
- Confirm the drive is a 3G3MX2 family - the 3G3MX and 3G3RX use a different option slot.
- Choose 3G3AX-MX2-PRT for PROFIBUS panels; -CIP for EtherNet/IP; -ML2 for MECHATROLINK-II.
- Choose the built-in RS-485 Modbus port when the cabinet has only one or two drives - no card cost.
- Verify the EtherCAT master supports the CoE drive profile; all major PLC vendors do.
- Check space on the front of the MX2 cabinet for the RJ45 ports and cable bend radius.
- Confirm the Sysmac Studio project includes the Omron-supplied ESI file before commissioning.
