Product Overview

The Omron 3G3MX2-A4040-V2 is a 4.0 kW (5 HP) variable-frequency drive from the MX2 V2 series, running on a three-phase 380-480 VAC supply. The V2 generation adds a faster CPU, simpler auto-tuning, and a detachable keypad with parameter copy as standard. The 9.2 A rated output is the heavy-duty (CT) figure for induction motors up to 4 kW.

When the MX2-A4040-V2 is the right drive

Pick the A4040-V2 for a 4 kW induction or permanent-magnet motor on a 400 V three-phase supply. Typical applications are mid-sized conveyors, fans, pumps, mixers, and machine-tool spindles. For lighter-duty (variable-torque) loads like fans and pumps, the same drive can run above its rated current in VT mode — check the manual for the derating curve. For 200 V single-phase input, look at the MX2-AB004-V2 (0.4 kW single-phase 200 V) or step up to MX2-AB015-V2.

Control, comms, and safety

V/f and sensorless vector control are built in; add the optional encoder feedback card for closed-loop vector control on a position-critical load. Modbus RTU is on the serial port as standard; optional communication cards cover EtherCAT, Profibus, DeviceNet, and CompoNet for a CJ / NJ / NX PLC. The built-in Safe Torque Off (STO) input meets SIL3 / PLd per IEC 61800-5-2, so the drive can be wired directly into a safety circuit without cutting main power.

Before ordering

The drive needs a 24 VDC control supply backup if you want the comms and STO to stay live after main power is removed. Add an input reactor or EMC filter on the supply side for harsh installations — the V2 has an internal EMC filter but it does not remove the need for a line reactor on a high-impedance supply. The detachable keypad can be moved to a cabinet door using the 3G3AX-OPCN1 remote-mount kit.

  • V/f and sensorless vector control; optional encoder feedback card for closed-loop
  • Built-in Modbus RTU; optional EtherCAT, Profibus, DeviceNet, CompoNet cards
  • Safe Torque Off (STO) SIL3 / PLd, TÜV certified
  • Detachable keypad with parameter copy
  • Operating temperature -10 to +50 °C
  • SKU: 3G3MX2-A4040-V2
  • Series: MX2 V2 series inverter
  • Voltage: 380-480 VAC
  • I/O: 4 I/O

Best-Fit Applications

  • Mid-sized conveyor drive on a packaging or material-handling line (4 kW class)
  • Industrial fan or pump on a 400 V three-phase supply with VT derating
  • Mixer or agitator drive in a process skid where sensorless vector gives holding torque at low speed
  • Machine-tool spindle where the optional encoder feedback card adds closed-loop speed accuracy
  • Safety-rated machine where the built-in STO replaces a contactor in the safety circuit

Buying Checklist

  • Choose 3G3MX2-A4040-V2 for a 4 kW 400 V motor in HD mode; pick the next size up (A4055-V2, 5.5 kW) for headroom.
  • Pick the V2 (not V1) generation for the faster CPU, simpler auto-tuning, and detachable keypad with parameter copy.
  • For a 200 V single-phase supply at this power level, look at the MX2-AB series (single-phase 200 V input).
  • Add the encoder feedback card if the load needs closed-loop speed or position accuracy beyond sensorless vector.
  • Use the built-in STO input on the safety circuit — it removes the need for a contactor on the safety stop.

FAQ for 3G3MX2-A4040-V2

What is the difference between 3G3MX2-A4040-V2 and 3G3MX2-A4040-V1?
Both are 4 kW MX2 inverters, but the V2 generation has a faster processor, simpler auto-tuning, and a detachable keypad with parameter copy as standard. The V2 also ships with the same control terminal layout as the V1, so wiring is interchangeable. Pick V2 for new installations; the V1 is a legacy part that Omron has been phasing out.
Does the 3G3MX2-A4040-V2 have Safe Torque Off?
Yes. The V2 has a built-in Safe Torque Off (STO) input that meets SIL3 / PLd per IEC 61800-5-2, TÜV certified. Wiring the STO input to your safety circuit removes the drive output without cutting main power, so restart is faster after a safety stop.
Can I run the A4040-V2 from a single-phase 200 V supply?
No. The A4040-V2 is a 400 V three-phase input drive. For 200 V single-phase input at this power level, look at the MX2-AB series (single-phase 200 V input drives), but those only go up to about 2.2 kW. For 4 kW on a 200 V supply, you need a three-phase 200 V drive (MX2-A2037-V2 or similar).
What communication cards are available for the MX2-A4040-V2?
Built-in Modbus RTU on the RS-485 port as standard. Optional plug-in cards add EtherCAT (3G3AX-MX2-ECT), Profibus, DeviceNet, and CompoNet — pick the one that matches your PLC fieldbus. The V2 generation supports the same communication-card set as the V1.
