Product Overview

The CJ2M-CPU11 is Omron's entry-level CJ2M CPU Unit — 5K steps of program memory, 64K words of data memory, and built-in RS-232C + USB programming ports — designed for compact machines where EtherNet/IP is not required. It is the smallest of the ten CJ2M CPU variants and the value-tier pick when the engineer is building a CJ-series rack with CJ1W expansion I/O (CJ1W-ID211, CJ1W-OD212, CJ1W-MAD42, CJ1W-NC233) and only needs serial Host Link for programming and HMI/SCADA networking. The CPU1x variant (no EtherNet/IP) saves roughly $300-500 over the equivalent CPU3x (with EtherNet/IP) — for applications where the network is Modbus RTU, Host Link, or a CJ1W-ETN21 Ethernet unit, the CPU11 is the right pick.

Decoding CJ2M-CPU11 within the CJ2M-CPU1@ / CPU3@ family

The CJ2M-CPU@@ model code has two positional digits that encode both program capacity and EtherNet/IP presence. The second digit (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) maps to program capacity (5K, 10K, 20K, 30K, 60K steps respectively, identical for both CPU1x and CPU3x). The first digit (1 vs 3) encodes EtherNet/IP: 1 = no EtherNet/IP, 3 = built-in EtherNet/IP with 2-port switch. The CJ2M-CPU11 codepoint thus decodes as 5K steps, no EtherNet/IP.

Built-in communications: RS-232C, USB, and the option-board slot

The CJ2M-CPU11 has three built-in communication interfaces: (a) RS-232C serial port (D-Sub 9-pin female connector, included) — supports Host Link (command-based serial from SCADA/HMI), 1:N NT Link (to Omron NS/NB HMIs), No-protocol mode (free-form ASCII to a barcode reader or scale), Serial PLC Link (CJ2M-to-CJ2M peer-to-peer without a master), Serial Gateway (CompoWay/F master converting Host Link to CompoWay/F), and Tool Bus (CX-Programmer connection). (b) USB 2.0 mini-B programming port — for CX-Programmer (CX-One or Sysmac Studio) connection at 12 Mbps full-speed, hot-pluggable.

Pulse I/O Module support — adding 4-axis positioning without an NC unit

The CJ2M-CPU11 supports up to two CJ2M-MD211 (NPN open-collector) or CJ2M-MD212 (PNP) Pulse I/O Modules mounted on the left side of the CPU. Each module adds: 4 high-speed counter inputs (100 kHz line-driver / 50 kHz open-collector), 4 interrupt inputs, 4 pulse outputs (100 kHz pulse train + PWM), and 20-input / 12-output I/O area allocated at CIO 2960-2963. With two modules, the CPU11 can do 4-axis positioning at 100 kHz without buying a separate CJ1W-NC233 (2-axis position control) or CJ1W-NC413 (4-axis open-collector). The Pulse I/O Module is the right pick for stepper-driven indexing tables, encoder-based cut-to-length, or registration-mark tracking on packaging lines.

FAQ for CJ2M-CPU11

What's the difference between CJ2M-CPU11 and CJ2M-CPU31?
Both are CJ2M CPUs with the same 5K-step program capacity, same 64K-word data memory, same LD execution time (0.04 us), and same RS-232C + USB + option board + Pulse I/O Module support. The only difference is the built-in EtherNet/IP port: CJ2M-CPU31 (this SKU's EIP sibling) has a 2-port EtherNet/IP switch on the front face supporting tag-data-link communication to NJ-series controllers, EtherNet/IP scanners, and remote I/O; CJ2M-CPU11 (this SKU) has no built-in EtherNet/IP.
Can the CJ2M-CPU11 communicate with NJ-series controllers over EtherNet/IP?
The CJ2M-CPU11 cannot be an EtherNet/IP scanner or adapter directly - it has no built-in EtherNet/IP port and the CP1W-ME05M option board only supports FINS/Host Link communication over Ethernet (not EtherNet/IP CIP routing). For EtherNet/IP communication with NJ-series controllers, use a CJ2M-CPU3@ (CPU31, CPU32, CPU33, CPU34, CPU35) which has the built-in EtherNet/IP port and supports tag-data-link (cyclic) communication plus explicit (message) communication.
Can I add a Pulse I/O Module to the CJ2M-CPU11 for positioning?
Yes - the CJ2M-CPU11 supports up to 2 CJ2M-MD211 (NPN open-collector) or CJ2M-MD212 (PNP) Pulse I/O Modules mounted on the left side of the CPU. Each module provides 4 high-speed counter inputs (100 kHz line-driver or 50 kHz open-collector), 4 interrupt inputs, and 4 pulse outputs (100 kHz pulse train + PWM). With 2 modules, the CPU11 can do 4-axis positioning at 100 kHz for stepper-driven indexing tables, encoder-based cut-to-length, or registration-mark tracking.
What option board fits in the CJ2M-CPU11 option slot?
The CJ2M-CPU11 option slot accepts 4 types of CP1W option boards: (a) CP1W-CIF01 RS-232C Option Board - adds a second RS-232C port with the same D-Sub 9-pin connector as the built-in port (15 m max cable). Adds 5 mA at 5 V. (b) CP1W-CIF11 RS-422A/485 Option Board (non-isolated) - adds an RS-422A or RS-485 port on a 5-terminal screw block (50 m max cable). Adds 30 mA at 5 V.
