Product Overview

The CP1L-M40DR-A is the 40-point variant of Omron's CP1L-M compact PLC family, with 24 × 24 VDC inputs, 16 × mechanical relay outputs rated 2 A / 250 VAC / 24 VDC per point, and 100-240 VAC power supply.

CP1L-M vs CP1L-L vs CP1L-J vs CP1L-EM family

The CP1L family has four sub-lines: CP1L-L (low-end, 5K steps, no HSC, no pulse output — limited I/O count of 14/20/30), CP1L-J (low-end equivalent, RS-232 instead of USB — discontinued), CP1L-M (medium, 10K steps, HSC up to 100 kHz on inputs, pulse-output up to 100 kHz on transistor models — discontinued 2027-06-30 — see replacement), and CP1L-EM (medium with EtherNet/IP, 10K steps, HSC, pulse output, built-in Ethernet — current production). The CP1L-M (this SKU) is the workhorse compact PLC for 2010-2025 machine designs that did not need Ethernet; CP1L-EM is the recommended replacement for new designs (since 2024).

CP1L-M40DR-A vs CP1L-M40DT1-D sibling (relay output vs transistor sinking output)

The CP1L-M40DR-A (this SKU) uses mechanical relay outputs rated 2 A per point, 250 VAC / 30 VDC max, with an expected mechanical life of 10 million operations and an electrical life of 100,000 operations at full rated load. The CP1L-M40DT1-D sibling uses 24 VDC transistor sinking (NPN) outputs rated 0.5 A per point, 24 VDC max, with no moving parts and a near-infinite electrical life.

USB port, programming, and CX-One / CX-Programmer

The CP1L-M (and CP1L-EM) ship with a USB 1.1 / 2.0 device port on the top of the CPU (Type-B mini-USB socket), capable of 12 Mbps programming and runtime upload/download via CX-Programmer 9.x and CX-One 4.x. The USB port presents as a standard serial port — no driver installation required on Windows 10 / 11 (Windows Update installs the CP1L USB driver automatically when the USB cable is plugged in). For 32-bit CX-Programmer v9.6x or v9.7x, the CP1L-M40DR-A appears in the device list under CP1L / CP1L-M / M40DR-A.

Buying Checklist

  • Pick CP1L-M40DR-A for a 40 I/O relay-output PLC on AC 100-240 VAC power — for spares replenishment of running systems
  • Pick CP1L-EM40DR-D for new designs requiring 40 I/O + relay output — same form factor, same instruction set, DC 24 VDC power, built-in EtherNet/IP
  • Pick CP1L-M40DT1-D for 40 I/O with transistor NPN sinking output — faster output switching for pulse-output applications up to 100 kHz
  • Pick CP1L-EM40DT1-D for 40 I/O + transistor NPN output + built-in EtherNet/IP — recommended for new 2025+ designs with network connectivity
  • Pick CP1L-L20DR-A for 20 I/O + relay output + AC power — compact low-end 14-input / 10-output PLC with 5K steps
  • Pick CP1E-N60DT1-D for 60 I/O + transistor output + DC power — cheaper than CP1L-M for cost-sensitive applications

FAQ for CP1L-M40DR-A

When was the CP1L-M40DR-A discontinued?
The CP1L-M40DR-A (along with the entire CP1L-L, CP1L-J, CP1L-M, CP1E-10, and CP1E-NA sub-lines) was placed on Omron's Discontinuation Notice in 2023, with the last production date scheduled for 2027-06-30. For spare-parts replenishment of running CP1L-M systems beyond that date, Omron has spare stocks, but new CP1L-M production is not available after the discontinuation date. The recommended replacement is the CP1L-EM40DR-D — 40 I/O with 24 VDC power supply and built-in EtherNet/IP.
What's the difference between CP1L-M40DR-A (relay) and CP1L-M40DT1-D (transistor)?
The CP1L-M40DR-A (this SKU) uses mechanical relay outputs rated 2 A per point at 250 VAC / 24 VDC — capable of switching AC or DC loads, with galvanic isolation between the PLC and the load, with built-in RC snubbers on each output for inductive loads, but limited to about 1 kHz switching speed and 100,000-operation electrical life at rated load.
Can the CP1L-M40DR-A connect to a modern EtherNet/IP network?
No, the CP1L-M40DR-A does NOT have built-in EtherNet/IP — only the CP1L-EM sub-line has Ethernet. For EtherNet/IP connectivity on a CP1L-M, you must add an external Ethernet option unit (CJ1W-EIP21 / CS1W-EIP21 EtherNet/IP unit) mounted in a CJ-series expansion rack on the CP1L's peripheral port. This is technically possible but rare — when Ethernet was needed for CP1L projects, the typical upgrade was to swap the CP1L-M40DR-A for a CP1L-EM40DR-D.
Can I program the CP1L-M40DR-A with a USB cable?
Yes — the CP1L-M (and CP1L-EM) have a built-in USB 1.1 / 2.0 device port on the top of the CPU (Type-B mini-USB socket). The USB cable (standard USB-A to USB mini-B) connects directly to a PC with CX-Programmer 9.x installed. On Windows 10 / 11, the CP1L USB driver installs automatically via Windows Update when the cable is plugged in — no manual driver download is required.
