Product Overview
The CP1L-M40DR-A is the 40-point variant of Omron's CP1L-M compact PLC family, with 24 × 24 VDC inputs, 16 × mechanical relay outputs rated 2 A / 250 VAC / 24 VDC per point, and 100-240 VAC power supply.
CP1L-M vs CP1L-L vs CP1L-J vs CP1L-EM family
The CP1L family has four sub-lines: CP1L-L (low-end, 5K steps, no HSC, no pulse output — limited I/O count of 14/20/30), CP1L-J (low-end equivalent, RS-232 instead of USB — discontinued), CP1L-M (medium, 10K steps, HSC up to 100 kHz on inputs, pulse-output up to 100 kHz on transistor models — discontinued 2027-06-30 — see replacement), and CP1L-EM (medium with EtherNet/IP, 10K steps, HSC, pulse output, built-in Ethernet — current production). The CP1L-M (this SKU) is the workhorse compact PLC for 2010-2025 machine designs that did not need Ethernet; CP1L-EM is the recommended replacement for new designs (since 2024).
CP1L-M40DR-A vs CP1L-M40DT1-D sibling (relay output vs transistor sinking output)
The CP1L-M40DR-A (this SKU) uses mechanical relay outputs rated 2 A per point, 250 VAC / 30 VDC max, with an expected mechanical life of 10 million operations and an electrical life of 100,000 operations at full rated load. The CP1L-M40DT1-D sibling uses 24 VDC transistor sinking (NPN) outputs rated 0.5 A per point, 24 VDC max, with no moving parts and a near-infinite electrical life.
USB port, programming, and CX-One / CX-Programmer
The CP1L-M (and CP1L-EM) ship with a USB 1.1 / 2.0 device port on the top of the CPU (Type-B mini-USB socket), capable of 12 Mbps programming and runtime upload/download via CX-Programmer 9.x and CX-One 4.x. The USB port presents as a standard serial port — no driver installation required on Windows 10 / 11 (Windows Update installs the CP1L USB driver automatically when the USB cable is plugged in). For 32-bit CX-Programmer v9.6x or v9.7x, the CP1L-M40DR-A appears in the device list under CP1L / CP1L-M / M40DR-A.
