Product Overview

The CP1W-AD042 is the standard 4-channel analog input expansion unit for Omron's CP-series small PLCs (CP1L and CP1E). Each of the 4 inputs accepts any of the six standard industrial signal ranges — 4 to 20 mA, 0 to 20 mA, 1 to 5 V, 0 to 5 V, 0 to 10 V, and -10 to +10 V — independently configured per channel via DIP switches on the side of the module. Resolution is 14-bit (effective 13-bit + sign, 14-bit unipolar / 14-bit bipolar including sign bit), giving 16384 discrete counts per bipolar range.

Where the CP1W-AD042 fits in the CP1W analog family

The CP1W analog family splits along three axes: input count (2 / 4 inputs), output count (0 / 2 / 4 outputs), and combination (in-only, out-only, in+out combo). The CP1W-AD042 (this SKU) is in-only with 4 inputs. The 2-input sibling is the CP1W-AD041 (12-bit, slower conversion — preferred for legacy installations where AD041 has been already installed and re-wiring is undesirable). The combination input+output is the CP1W-MAD42 (4 inputs + 2 outputs, 12-bit, DIP-switched ranges — used when both AI and AO are needed in one module) or the CP1W-MAD44 (4 inputs + 4 outputs, 12-bit, newer revision).

Wiring, DIP-switch setup, and the 250 Ω / 100 Ω current-sense resistor

Wiring uses a removable M3 screw terminal block (CP1W-AD042 ships with the terminal block wired to 4 analog input channels + 24 VDC supply). The input channels are differential inputs (V+/V-) with a dedicated common (AG) terminal — keep analog wiring at least 100 mm away from AC power wiring, VFD cables, and motor wiring. For 4-20 mA and 0-20 mA current inputs, the input is wired across the V+ and V- terminals — no external sense resistor is required because the CP1W-AD042 has an internal 250 Ω sense resistor on each current input channel (DIP-switched to enable).

Conversion formula, scaling, and the 6000/60000 PV scaling

The CP1W-AD042 stores the converted analog value in allocated DM area words (default: D200 to D203 for inputs 1-4, configurable in CX-Programmer). For 0-10 V unipolar, the full-scale 0 to 10 V maps to 0000 to 6000 hex (0-6144 raw binary codes), giving 6144 discrete levels for a 10 V span. For ±10 V bipolar, the -10 to +10 V maps to 8000 to 7FFF hex (-32768 to +32767 raw codes), giving the full 14-bit bipolar resolution.

FAQ for CP1W-AD042

Can the CP1W-AD042 mix voltage and current inputs on different channels?
Yes — each of the 4 input channels has its own DIP switch on the side of the module that selects the input range independently. Channel 1 could be 4-20 mA (DIP switch setting A), channel 2 could be 0-10 V (DIP switch setting B), channel 3 could be ±10 V (DIP switch setting C), and channel 4 could be 0-5 V (DIP switch setting D) — any combination is permitted.
What's the difference between CP1W-AD042 and CP1W-AD041?
The CP1W-AD042 (this SKU) is the current-generation 4-channel AI with 14-bit resolution and 1 ms per-channel conversion time. The CP1W-AD041 is the legacy 4-channel AI with 12-bit resolution and a slower conversion time (also 1 ms per channel, but the 12-bit resolution gives only 4096 discrete levels vs the AD042's 16384).
Can I scale the raw analog value to engineering units in the CP1L?
Yes — the standard approach is to use the CP1L's SCL2 (scaling) instruction in ladder logic. The raw value 0000 to 6000 hex (0 to 24576 decimal, or 0 to 6000 BCD depending on signal range) maps to engineering unit low and high — for a 4-20 mA pressure transmitter with 0-300 PSI span, the scaling is: zero-scale = 0000 hex raw / 0 PSI, full-scale = 1770 hex raw (6000 BCD) / 300 PSI.
Does the CP1W-AD042 work with the discontinued CP1L-M series?
Yes — the CP1W-AD042 is fully compatible with the CP1L-L (legacy), CP1L-J (legacy), CP1L-M (legacy, discontinued 2027-06-30), and CP1L-EM (current production). The expansion flat-cable connection is identical across all CP1L sub-series, and the analog I/O allocation in CX-Programmer is the same DM-area mapping.
