Product Overview

The CP1W-40EDR is the most-deployed CP-series expansion I/O module — 40 points total in a 90 × 150 × 85 mm housing that sits to the right of the CP1L / CP1H / CP1E CPU and connects via a flat ribbon-style CP1W-CN811 cable (sold separately, 80 mm typical). The breakdown: 24 × 24 VDC inputs and 16 × mechanical relay outputs. The 'E' in the part number indicates Expansion I/O unit; the 'D' indicates DC inputs; the 'R' indicates Relay outputs (versus 'T' for transistor or 'S' for triac).

How to fit a CP1W expansion rack

Every CP1L, CP1H, and CP1E CPU supports up to 3 CP1W expansion units in series (CP1W-40EDR, -20EDR, -16ER, etc.) using the CP1W-CN811 ribbon cable. The total point count is limited by the host CPU's I/O table — CP1L-M / CP1L-L support up to 160 I/O total, so a CP1L-M40DR-A with three CP1W-40EDR units can scale to 40 + 3 × 40 = 160 points; CP1E-E 40-point can host up to two CP1W-40EDR modules before the 160-point ceiling.

Where to use relay vs transistor outputs

The 16 × 2 A relay outputs of the CP1W-40EDR are the right choice for mixed-signal panels that switch both AC and DC loads — solenoid valves on 230 VAC, low-voltage indicators on 24 VDC, indicator lamps on 110 V, and motor starter coils on 120 V contactor coils. Each relay can switch any mix of AC or DC within its rating.

Key Features

  • 40 I/O points total — 24 × 24 VDC inputs and 16 × 2 A relay outputs
  • PNP or NPN configurable inputs
  • 2 A relay output per point, 8 A per common, rated 250 VAC / 24 VDC
  • Mechanical relay life 100,000 operations at rated load
  • Connects to any CP1L-M, CP1L-L, CP1H, or CP1E CPU via CP1W-CN811 cable
  • Up to 3 CP1W expansion modules per host CPU, total 160 I/O addressability
  • Input ON/OFF filter settable 0 to 32 ms in 1 ms increments from CX-Programmer
  • Easy I/O registration via Sysmac Studio or CX-Programmer 'Expansion Unit' auto-detect
  • SKU: CP1W-40EDR
  • Series: CP1W Expansion I/O
  • Voltage: 24 VDC
  • I/O: 24 I/O

Best-Fit Applications

  • Expanding a CP1L-M40DR-A from 40 to 80 I/O for mid-size conveyor sorting applications
  • Adding 16 × 230 VAC solenoid-valve outputs to a CP1E-N40DR-A on a packaging machine header
  • Adding 24 × 24 VDC sensor inputs for an automatic assembly-line PLC reading limit switches and proximity sensors
  • Building a small batch-control panel on a CP1L-L20DR-A where extra inputs and outputs are needed but space is tight

Buying Checklist

  • Pick the CP1W-40EDR for the highest-density mix — 24 inputs and 16 relays in one module
  • Pick the CP1W-20EDR when you need fewer points and don't want to pay for 40-point I/O blocks
  • Pick the CP1W-16ER when you need 16 × 16 expansion with all relay outputs
  • Pick the CP1W-40EDT for all-transistor NPN outputs
  • Pick the CP1W-40EDT1 for all-transistor PNP sourcing outputs
  • Pick the CP1W-AD042 when you need analog inputs instead of digital

FAQ for CP1W-40EDR

Can the CP1W-40EDR be used with a CP1E-E40DR-A host?
Yes. The CP1W-40EDR expands the CP1E-E40DR-A from 40 to 80 I/O with the CP1W-CN811 cable. The CP1E-E supports up to 3 expansion units (subject to 160-point ceiling) — so adding 1 × CP1W-40EDR works, but adding a second CP1W-40EDR plus a third module would exceed the host's I/O ceiling. Configure the expansion I/O mapping in CX-Programmer under PLC / I/O Table Settings or Sysmac Studio under Controller / Configuration.
Are the inputs PNP or NPN by default?
Both. The CP1W-40EDR inputs accept either polarity because the input circuit is a balanced-bridge design — wire the COM terminal to either +24 V (for NPN / sinking sensors which switch to 0 V) or to 0 V (for PNP / sourcing sensors which switch to +24 V). The PLC detects the input state regardless of which you choose.
How fast can the relay outputs switch?
Around 10 ms operate, 5 ms release — typical for a mechanical relay with armature. For high-speed output applications (1 ms pulse trains, stepper pulse trains, frequent valve switching), use the all-transistor CP1W-40EDT (NPN) or -40EDT1 (PNP) instead, which switches in ≤ 0.1 ms.
Can the 2 A relay output drive a small electric motor?
Direct motor switching is generally not recommended because of motor inrush current (6× to 10× the steady-state running current). For a 2 A relay the max safe motor rating is around 100 to 150 W of inductive AC motor load. Larger motors should be switched through a contactor — the relay drives the contactor coil (typically 5 to 10 VA) and the contactor's main contacts handle the motor current.
