Product Overview

The Omron CP1W-40EDT is a 40-point digital I/O expansion unit for the CP1E, CP1L, and CP1H compact PLC families. It adds 24 DC inputs and 16 transistor (sinking, NPN) outputs to a CP-series CPU, with a removable terminal block for the I/O wiring and a flat cable that plugs into the right side of the CPU. It is the standard pick when a CP1L or CP1H needs more machine-side I/O than the CPU provides on its own, and the load devices are DC solenoids, relays, or indicator lamps that can be driven by a sinking output.

Choosing between the three CP1W-40ED variants

CP1W-40EDT is the NPN (sinking) output. The same I/O count in PNP (sourcing) form is the CP1W-40EDT1, and the mechanically isolated relay-output version is the CP1W-40EDR. The choice comes from the load: use EDT with NPN-style field wiring, EDT1 with PNP-style field wiring, and EDR for AC or mixed-voltage loads. The compact CP1W-20EDT (12 in / 8 out) is the half-size version when only a few extra points are needed.

Mounting and wiring notes

The unit mounts on the same DIN rail as the CPU or screws to the back panel. It draws 24 VDC from the CPU through the expansion cable; no separate supply is needed for the input circuitry. Outputs switch up to 0.3 A per point across a 4.5-30 VDC load. Use a separate 24 VDC source for output commons if field wiring carries more current than the CPU's service supply can provide.

Before ordering

Confirm the CPU has a free CP-series expansion port on its right side. Plan the total 5 VDC current draw of all expansion units against the CPU's 5 V budget. Add a CP1W-CN811 I/O connection cable only when the unit is mounted away from the CPU rack.

Key Features

  • 40-point digital I/O expansion (24 DC inputs, 16 NPN outputs)
  • Plugs into the right side of a CP1E, CP1L, or CP1H CPU
  • NPN (sinking) transistor outputs at 0.3 A per point
  • Removable terminal block for I/O wiring
  • 24 VDC field power drawn from the CP-series expansion bus
  • DIN-rail or screw panel mounting
  • Part of the CP1W I/O family shared across CP1 PLC lines
  • SKU: CP1W-40EDT
  • Series: CP1W expansion I/O for CP-series PLCs
  • I/O: 40 I/O

Best-Fit Applications

  • Adding I/O to a CP1L or CP1H CPU at the end of a machine line
  • Expanding the I/O of a CP1E N-series CPU for an OEM skid build
  • Driving 24 VDC solenoid valves and indicator lamps from a CP-series rack
  • Picking up extra machine-side I/O for a packaging, filling, or assembly cell
  • Extending a CP1H system to support more conveyors or station sensors

Buying Checklist

  • Choose CP1W-40EDT for NPN (sinking) outputs on a CP1E, CP1L, or CP1H CPU.
  • Choose CP1W-40EDT1 for PNP (sourcing) outputs at the same I/O count.
  • Choose CP1W-40EDR for relay outputs when driving AC or mixed-voltage loads.
  • Choose CP1W-20EDT for a smaller 12-in / 8-out NPN expansion at half the size.
  • Confirm the CPU has a free right-side expansion port and DIN-rail space.
  • Check the total 5 V current draw of all expansions against the CPU budget.

FAQ for CP1W-40EDT

What is the difference between CP1W-40EDT and CP1W-40EDT1?
Both are 40-point (24 in / 16 out) CP-series expansions with the same wiring footprint. CP1W-40EDT has NPN (sinking) transistor outputs, and CP1W-40EDT1 has PNP (sourcing) transistor outputs. Pick the variant that matches the field device wiring at the terminal block.
Can the CP1W-40EDT be used with a CP1L or CP1H CPU?
Yes. The CP1W-40EDT is part of the shared CP1W I/O family and is supported by CP1E, CP1L, and CP1H CPUs. It plugs into the right-side expansion port of the CPU and is registered automatically in the CX-Programmer I/O table.
What cable connects the CP1W-40EDT to a remote CPU rack?
For a remote-mounted expansion, use a CP1W-CN811 I/O connection cable. The standard length is 0.1 m for side-by-side mounting on the same DIN rail. Add the longer cable only when the expansion has to sit away from the CPU.
