Product Overview

The CP1W-MAB221 is an analog I/O option board that plugs into option-board slot 1 or slot 2 of a CP1L-EM or CP1L-EL CPU unit, adding two analog inputs and two analog outputs without taking up a slot on the CP1W expansion bus. The two inputs are software-configurable per channel for 0–10 V (resolution 1/4000, ~2.5 mV per step) or 0–20 mA (resolution 1/2000, ~10 µA per step); the two outputs are fixed-range 0–10 V (resolution 1/4000).

Why this SKU and not CP1W-MAD42, CP1W-ADB21, or CP1W-DAB21V

The CP1W-MAB221 is one of four analog option boards in the CP1L family. CP1W-ADB21 is input-only (2 analog inputs, same 1/4000 voltage and 1/2000 current resolution as the MAB221). CP1W-DAB21V is output-only (2 analog outputs, 0–10 V or 0/4–20 mA jumper-selectable per channel, 1/6000 resolution). CP1W-MAB221 is the I/O combo board (2 in + 2 out). The CP1W-MAD42 is a different class entirely — it is a full CP1W expansion I/O unit (not an option board) that mounts on the CP1W expansion bus and provides 4 inputs and 2 outputs at 1/12000 resolution with bipolar ±10 V ranges.

Installing in the option board slot and wiring

The CP1W-MAB221 snaps into option-board slot 1 or slot 2 of the CP1L CPU. Both slots are identical — the slot-1/slot-2 distinction only matters for serial option boards (CP1W-CIF01/11/12-V1) where slot 1 is the RS-232C port. You can fit one analog option board in each of the two slots if needed, for a maximum of 4 analog inputs and 4 analog outputs per CPU. Wiring uses a removable screw-terminal block on the front of the CPU (input terminals V1/I1+/I1− and V2/I2+/I2−, output terminals V OUT1+ / V OUT1− and V OUT2+ / V OUT2−).

When the CP1W-MAB221 is the wrong choice

Three common pitfalls. First, the analog option boards only fit the CP1L-EM and CP1L-EL CPUs (the -EL20DR-D, -EM30DT-D, -EM40DT1-D etc.) — they do not fit the smaller CP1L-L, CP1L-M, or CP1L-J CPUs, and they cannot be retrofitted to CP1E. Second, the outputs are voltage-only (0–10 V) — if you need a 4–20 mA output signal to drive an industrial valve positioner or a panel meter, you need the CP1W-DAB21V or an external signal converter.

Key Features

  • Analog I/O option board for CP1L-EM and CP1L-EL CPU units
  • 2 analog inputs: 0–10 V or 0–20 mA per channel

  • Plugs into option-board slot 1 or slot 2 of the CP1L CPU
  • Conversion time ~1 ms per enabled channel
  • Removable screw-terminal block on the CPU front panel
  • Cannot be used with CP1L-J, CP1L-L, CP1L-M, or CP1E CPUs
  • Operating temperature 0 to +55 °C
  • SKU: CP1W-MAB221
  • Series: CP1W (CP1L option board)
  • Voltage: 0 TO 10 V
  • I/O: 2 I/O

Best-Fit Applications

  • Reading a 0–10 V pressure transducer on a small pneumatic test stand running on a CP1L-EM
  • Adding two thermocouple-free analog inputs to a CP1L-EM-controlled packaging line for tank-level monitoring
  • Driving a 0–10 V proportional valve command from a CP1L-EL in a dosing skid
  • Closed-loop tension control on a CP1L-EM-driven unwind stand using load cell input + dancer output

Buying Checklist

  • Pick CP1W-MAB221 when you need 2 analog inputs AND 2 analog outputs on a CP1L-EM or CP1L-EL CPU
  • Pick CP1W-ADB21 if you only need analog inputs
  • Pick CP1W-DAB21V if you only need analog outputs
  • Pick CP1W-MAD42 when you need 4 inputs and 2 outputs at 1/12000 resolution with bipolar ranges — note it uses a CP1W expansion slot, not an option.
  • The MAB221 cannot be combined with CP1W-CIF41, CP1W-DAM01, or CP1W-ME05M in the same CPU
  • Verify your CPU is a CP1L-EM@@D or CP1L-EL@@D — the MAB221 does not fit CP1L-J, CP1L-L, CP1L-M, or CP1E

FAQ for CP1W-MAB221

Is the CP1W-MAB221 a 1-output or 2-output module?
It is a 2-output module. The older catalog descriptions that read '2-Input 1-Output' are incorrect — the MAB221 has 2 analog inputs and 2 analog outputs. If you only need outputs, the CP1W-DAB21V is the dedicated 2-channel analog output board; if you only need inputs, the CP1W-ADB21 is the dedicated 2-channel input board.
Which CPU units can the CP1W-MAB221 be used with?
The CP1W-MAB221 fits only the CP1L-EM and CP1L-EL CPU units — models like CP1L-EM30DT-D, CP1L-EM40DT1-D, CP1L-EL20DR-D. It cannot be installed in the CP1L-J, CP1L-L, or CP1L-M CPUs (those do not have option-board slots), and it is not compatible with CP1E series CPUs. The board plugs into either option-board slot 1 or slot 2 of the CPU.
What is the resolution of the CP1W-MAB221 analog inputs?
Voltage inputs (0–10 V range) have 1/4000 resolution, or about 2.5 mV per step. Current inputs (0–20 mA range) have 1/2000 resolution, or about 10 µA per step. Output resolution on the 0–10 V outputs is also 1/4000. Overall accuracy is ±0.6 % of full scale at 25 °C. For higher resolution you need the CP1W-MAD42 (1/12000, 4 inputs + 2 outputs), which is a full expansion unit instead of an option board.
Can the CP1W-MAB221 output a 4–20 mA signal?
No — the MAB221 outputs are fixed 0–10 V only and cannot source a 4–20 mA current loop signal directly. If you need a current output (for a panel meter, valve positioner, or VFD speed reference that expects 4–20 mA), use the CP1W-DAB21V output option board instead — it has jumper-selectable voltage or current output per channel — or add an external voltage-to-current converter on the field side.
