The Omron D4SL-N4EFA-DN is the 4-contact model in the D4SL-N compact solenoid-locking safety-door switch family. The head accepts an operation key (D4SL-K1 / K2 / K3 / K5, sold separately) and the solenoid locks the key in place when the cabinet door is closed. The "A" suffix is the lock code: mechanical lock with solenoid RELEASE. The default state is LOCKED -- the door stays locked if power to the cabinet is lost, so operators cannot open the guard on a machine that has stopped but still has a hazardous flywheel or a capacitor bank to discharge.

Why the 4-contact model is the common pick

The 4-contact form (2NC/1NO door + 1NC/1NO lock monitor, all slow-action with certified direct opening on the NCs per EN 60947-5-1) is enough wiring for a Cat 3 / PL d dual-channel safety circuit -- one NC channel for the door position, one NC for the lock monitor, the NO for a non-safety monitor signal, and the remaining NC for redundancy. Why the A code vs the C code matters

Pick the A code (mechanical lock with solenoid release -- this SKU) when the door must stay locked during a power loss -- the standard pick for a vertical-spindle press, a robot cell, a hydraulic accumulator bank, a centrifuge, a high-inertia flywheel. Pick the C code (solenoid lock with mechanical release) instead when the door must UNLOCK during a power loss -- a fire-egress enclosure, a maintenance-only interlock where a trapped operator must be able to exit without mains power. The D4SL-N4EFA-DN does not unlock on power loss.

FAQ for D4SL-N4EFA-DN

Does the D4SL-N4EFA-DN achieve Cat 4 / PL e by itself?
No. One switch with single-channel wiring cannot achieve Cat 4 / PL e -- that category requires two channels of wiring from the safety input device PLUS the D4SL's certified direct-opening contacts PLUS an upstream safety controller that monitors both channels. With the 4-contact D4SL-N4EFA-DN, a typical Cat 3 / PL d circuit is one NC channel for the door position and one NC channel for the lock monitor, fed into a G9SA-301 or equivalent. For Cat 4 / PL e, step up to the 6-contact D4SL-N6EFA-DN with two channels per door.
What is the difference between the A code and the C code?
Lock direction. The A code is mechanical lock with solenoid RELEASE: the default state is LOCKED, the solenoid must be energised to release the lock, and the door stays locked if power is lost. The C code is solenoid lock with mechanical release: the default state is UNLOCKED, the solenoid must be energised to engage the lock, and the door unlocks if power is lost. Pick A for hazardous machinery (the common pick); pick C for fire-egress enclosures where a trapped operator must be able to exit without mains power.
Does the operation key ship with the switch?
No. The operation key (D4SL-K1 horizontal / K2 vertical / K3 adjustable / K5 angled) is a separate line item and must be ordered at the same time -- the switch is incomplete without the key. The K1 is the common pick for a hinged door on the horizontal plane; the K3 is the adjustable pick when the door alignment varies; the K2 is for vertical insertion (a sliding guard).
